Living room help. PIPs- Updated PIP (moodboard)

I want to bring some color to this room.  I was thinking green and blue throw pillows (to tie in the dining room and hallway), a new rug, and new wall hangings for the wall you see straight ahead in the first pic.  Curtains will be cream colored.  We are in most desperate need of a new rug.  The rug shown in the PIP is 5 years old and is getting worn out, and I just don't like it anymore (I paid less than $100 for it at Target).  Here are some pics, kind of old, but these give you a general idea of what we have going on now (ignore the purple paint you see to the left).

 image

This (old) pic is what is now against he empty wall to the left of the above pic.  We actually have real photos of us in the frames now.

What rug would you put with pillows like this (my current favs)? Others suggestions welcome.

image

Any suggestions for something to put on that back wall?

ETA:

How do we all feel about this:

Re: Living room help. PIPs- Updated PIP (moodboard)

  • I think curtains would have the biggest impact in that room, but definitely not cream-colored.  Throw pillows would help, and you could even switch out or do a fabric cover for that ottoman.  I don't think that scrolly metal thing adds much.  I would do a gallery wall there that is big enough to incorporate the existing shelves (you may need to move them in a little bit, it's hard to tell from that pic).  You could even do the whole gallery wall with shelves, but have some big pieces to balance things out proportionally.

  • Fun room!

I really like that scrolly thing. Can you find another and use that to replace the wall art on the sides of the window. It'd add some more impact without a ton of clutter.

I love those pillows. What about something in a stripe that coordinates with those colors? Even a solid color could be cute if it's the right material/cushy. But I tend to pretty plain when it comes to rugs so maybe don't listen to me. :)

Then as for the photo with the console and shelves...I'd hang a mini photowall where the scrolly thing is and get some chunky fun colored candles or vases for the shelves.

  • We have a yellow/white lab who sheds.  A lot.  So I want to keep things lighter to hide some of the dog hair that's always floating around, so that's why I was thinking cream/white.  I know we need curtains, it's been on my list for a long time.  It's mostly laziness and lack of time stopping me LOL.  But to be totally honest. The rug is just flat out gross because DD spit up a lot, so that's my #1 priority to change :-(

I was thinking two of the patterned pillows and then a solid color to coordinate.

I was also thinking a plain non-patterned rug, but wasn't sure. What color rug?  Blue?  Green?  Tan?

What about some frames (4- two on each wall vertical) like this where the art on each side of the window is now:

Meh?  I could even paint them a fun color to go with the pillows.

  • Can you paint the walls?  I think it would look so much nicer if the walls and couch weren't so close in color.  I think that throw pillow is really pretty, and think the room would look awesome if you painted the walls a lighter shade of the blue/green color in the pillow.  Then you could pick up another color from the pillow for curtains (cream if you want), and also get a new rug.

I've been trying to get DH to get on board with painting the living room a different color, but it is a no-go.  I'll have to live with what we've got for now unfortunately.  Maybe once the hallway and kitchen are painted he'll be more willing to redo the living room.

  • Oh and to add, my dining room is already a green apple green and the hallway will be a light blue.  Could I still do a blue or green in the living room then?  What if I did a darker brown color (I'm totally OK with darker colors in my home LOL.)?

  • If you want a solid color rug that is pet and kid friendly, I highly recommend this one:

     http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Royal_Chenille_I_Area_Rug/920/

It's cheap, and the best part - it's machine washable!!  I LOVE ours.  We put a rug pad under it and it's nice and soft for our toddler to play on.  We go the 8 x 11 size, so we do have to take it to the laundry mat to wash as it's too big for our washer and dryer.  I love to not have to be uptight about spills and our dogs.

I agree with this. I think some contrast between the couch and walls would be really nice, and a light blue/green on the walls would be beautiful. I'd also switch out the vertical blinds with curtains - maybe in a color or pattern that would go with the throw pillow.

  • Brown walls would be pretty, but I'd go more with a mocha color in that room. Dark brown could make it feel like a cave.

Like the color of this wall?  Maybe if I get DH to golf all day and get a baby sitter this summer.....hmmmm

  • With dogs, I'd paint the walls.  Brown is a hard one to find the right shade, so I'd make sure to go with a good paint that is true to color like Benjamin Moore.  I love their paints.  Behr is nice, but Benjamin Moore colors are always fantastic.

Then I'd go with a natural material rug, like jute.  I have one that I got at Ikea & with two dogs it's great.  Doesn't show fur, and I can still sweep it.

I'd also go with natural material blinds, and then use colorful curtains that compliment the wall color you choose (opposite on the color wheel though).  Then stick with that accent color for pillows and such.

  • I like the rug that PP posted and the frames for the two sides of the windows that you posted. Paint would be nice but I am no help there, I would probably go with a pretty light blue to complement the pillows you had picked out. Brown would be ok but your gallery wall furniture is pretty dark already and I am not sure if it might be too heavy...

  • Curtains that go with the pillows you picked. I think that would change the whole feel of the room. Warm it up, without having to change the wall color.

I have shades of blues and greens in all but one room.  That way I can move accessories from one room to another for a change in decor that is free to me.  That pillow is a great inspiration.

Darker brown would be pretty but would show all the hair from your pet.

Would it look ok with the black furniture and shelves?  I'd like to keep as many things original as possible.  I'm poor.  Ha!

Yes, I think black furniture and shelves would be fine with brown walls!

Awesome.  For some reason, I really want to stay brown/neutral in my living room for wall color.  No real reason, I'm just feeling "brown" in there.  I'm a weirdo.

  • Alright.....if anyone's still checking here, how do we feel about these curtains?

    image

They're on clearance at Pier 1 for $17.48 ($65 reg. price) per panel which is pretty cheap.  Would these look good with the inspiration pillows and the darker brown paint?

I think, with the curtains and the pillows, you may not even need darker paint. I would try it and go from there.

From the way the colors look online and on my computer, I think the curtains and pillows will look great together (but of course you won't know for sure until you see the actual products).  I still vote for mocha walls!!  I think the room would be soooo pretty.

Gah!  I can't decide!  My gut tells me to do cream curtains, but the blue ones are such a good deal!  I do think I will paint the walls mocha, maybe this summer.  I'll go checkout the curtains tomorrow, and see if they will even work or not.  They might not be even close to what they appear online and then the choice will be easy.

  • How do we feel about this rug? I kind of love it, and it's price of only $142 (75% off $557)

  • Have you tried making a mood board on Olioboard or another site?  It can really help you picture the way everything will come together.  I like the rug a lot and think it might work, but it's hard to tell without looking at the patterns near each other.
  • Okay, I just tried the Olioboard thing (how had I never heard of that before?).  Anywho....here is what I came up with.  The couch pic is similar, but we have leather, and the buffet table we have is slightly different.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.

  • Here is the same with a different paint color (which I like a lot better)

  • I like this even more with more neutral curtains (can you tell I'm bored?)

Olioboard is addicting and fun!  When I look at this I feel unsure about it.  However, I used a decorator to help me accessorize my living room and kitchen, and one thing she told me when I emailed her some mood boards is that you have to keep in mind that the items aren't going to be right on top of each other.  Sometimes two things that don't look great right next to each other will look nice when there is space between them.  When I look at the pillow right next to the rug I'm not crazy about it.  However,  if they aren't right on top of each other, it might look nice.  Same thing with the curtains and pillow.

Maybe play with the mood board and try to move the rug so it is down on the floor, make the pillows smaller and on top of the couch (not so small that they are to scale with the couch), and then make the wall color bigger so it goes behind the entire mood board?  This might help see if the items "go" even though they don't match.

Hopefully some other girls will chime in.

    image

I don't know, that just seems overwhelmingly brown and the pretty blue in the pillows seems out of place.  If you do neutral curtains, I'd find a more colorful rug.  I also think I would go even lighter with the curtains so they aren't quite so close to the wall color.
