We had some water damage in our kitchen in November and replaced our laminate flooring throughout the main floor with new laminate. We HATE the new stuff! LOL Thankfully the store has an awesome guarantee and because we're not happy with it we can replace it for free (just have to pay the difference if we choose a more expensive product).
So, we're upgrading to hardwood. One of the things we don't like about the laminate is that the pattern is so repetitive and obvious, so that's what we are wanting to avoid with the real stuff.
Some info that may be useful: we have a 40-ish pound Golden retriever. She is getting older and settling down a bit but still gets excited and will likely scratch the hell out of whatever we choose! We also have a 2.5 year old crazy little boy and a baby girl due in 25 days!!
Option 1: Birch (on the left). Much softer wood, will show a lot of wear. This is the safer option because the color is going to be quite consistent throughout.
Option 2: An exotic Acacia (on the right). Much harder than the birch, but riskier because of the color variation.
Most of our decor is pretty traditional but minimal. We don't have a lot of clutter just basic pieces with clean lines.
Here are a few pics of the acacia installed in a home that the sales rep sent me to give an idea of what it could look like in a larger application.
So what would you choose?

Re: Please vote on hardwood floors!
I am really not a fan of the color variation in the Acacia. Way too busy for me. By default, I'd choose the Birch.
When we move into our new home, we're getting Brazillian Teak which is a very hard wood. It has light to dark color variations but not quite so busy.

I can't remember were you the one with the splatted maple? Can you post pics of the laminate you hate and why in a follow up post? Stuff like that can be really helpful to others who are looking to replace their flooring.
Since you're redoing it anyway can I ask a few more questions? Is this a floor you'll ever be refinishing later to fix the scratches and dents?
