I'm going to be "that girl": serger

So my sweet little newborn poops a lot. Like, waaay more than my toddler (like, obviously). So the amount of cloth wipes I had was not enough. Now I'm making more using the turn and topstitch method on two pieces of flannel. Easy, but I hate t&t.

We gave ourselves a little fun money from our tax return and I'm thinking I want to buy a serger. Any suggestions on a good, cheap serger? I know, I know...cheap isn't best, but I will seriously only be using this to make some wipes, maybe try out some cloth diapers, and other really small and random projects like that. My budget is around $150-200.

  • Get yourself the Brother 1034D.  It is at the top of your budget, but it is soooo widely used in the blog world, that you will find a tutorial or video for any technique you can imagine.  Then, go to Amazon, make an order of $23 worth of stuff then add this book to your cart to bring you to $25 for the free shipping.  Cmeon recommended it and, for the price, it has been a great resource!

And you say you are only going to use if for boring stuff, but once you get it, you will use it to make those sweet girls matching dresses and other fun stuff!!

And, we need updated pictures of Miss Adair (and Lily too)!  I need a baby fix :)

  • Yes- get the Brother. I love my cheap Janome/Kenmore, but, it's:

    1. Not cheap anymore.

    2. Not nearly as common as the Brother is in blog-land, so if you need hand holding, I'm all you've got. LOL!

The cheap-o book is really great for $2 or whatever it is. A nice basic reference, lots of pictures.

DH's cousin's baby (I have no idea what that relation is to me) finally made his appearance this morning, and oh, newborns- they are just the best. Poopy little things that they are. :)

  • I have the Brother serger as well, and while I don't love it, it will do great for serging the edges of wipes.

Maybe I should get the book PP's mentioned.

I have a really bad taste in my mouth about Brother after my cheap Brother sewing machine gave me such fits. Please tell me this will not be that way. :)

I am going to give my local dealer a call to see if he has anything used right now and maybe I'll be able to pull the plug this weekend. Is it really hard to learn?

  • I found a used Husky on Craigslist.  I like it very much. It's modern, with an LCD, was priced very very well, and a retired home ec teacher owned it, so it was well maintained.  It came with the manual, indexed with tabs by her, and I purchased the $2 recommended book from Amazon.  I haven't used it much, but I am really pleased with it.

I did conference with the local sewing machine guy before I bought it.
