Until recently I was very boring with my makeup, with all the makeup I owned fitting into a very small cosmetics bag and pretty much wearing the same things every day. However, I now have a bit of a makeup addition (I blame Pinterest and beauty blogs that I've started reading), but am concerned about the shelf life of products. For example, I've read that eyeliner should be replaced every 1 - 2 years, lipstick is good for only up to 2 years, one year for bronzer, etc. With the amount of makeup I'm accumulating, there will definitely be some products that I'd like to keep around for longer than recommended.
How much makeup do you typically own at once and how often do you toss things?
Right now I'm probably at 20 eye liners, 3 foundations, four bronzers, 10 lip glosses, 10 lipsticks, 2 blushes, 3 or 4 eye palettes plus maybe 6 shadow duos or singles (for me, this is a LOT of stuff) . . . and I will still be buying things here and there.
Re: How much makeup do you own and how often do you toss?
I think sometimes those shelf life things are bogus. Just another way to make you think you NEED to buy something new. I go with the thought that if it smells and looks ok, then its ok.
Also, I don't know if you visit MUA, but I've been swapping stuff there (nothing that can't be santized though). It works for me.
I do prefer a minimalist collection myself.
I have about 3 eyeliners.
I have a Tinted Moisturizer and got a Foundation today.
I have 2 lipglosses (probably never have more than 2 lip products on the go)
I have about 15 eyeshadows and will admit I keep this until I shouldn't (ie. they crumble). If I had an eye infection I'd toss them right away.
I have a bit of a makeup addiction too but I'm pretty loyal to certain brands and I heavily research before I buy.
I usually "Back to Mac" my things so that I get a product back for six returns. The products aren't always finished. Sometimes they're ones I've grown tired of.
I could not even try to estimate what I own. Approximately 3-4 large makeup boxes filled to the brim! Reason being is I used to work for MAC, and we got a good amount of each collection at every launch, and a high dollar amount of gratis of our choice every year. Plus the discount was amazing! Then, I started working for another cosmetic company that was equally generous. So, I have tons. Honestly, I toss out stuff once I notice their formulas changing. Lipgloss color changing or smelling, dried out eyeliner, etc. If it smells or looks even a little different, I toss it.
Ditto, I have an atrocious amount, like ridiculous! My sister used to work for MAC and NARS and gave me stuff all.the.time. Now she works at the fragrance counter, so don't ask me how much perfume I own...LOL. I only toss once they seem "expired"...
I have just enough or possibly too much makeup. I toss an item when it doesn't look, smell and/or work like it did when I first bought it. I'm pretty good at keeping my makeup brushes clean and I think this helps.
Out of all my various kinds, my lipstick and lipgloss collection is the most outta control as far as quantity.
Blog: Call Me Imelda
That's alot dawg.
But I admit I had a ton more makeup in my late teens - early 20s than I do now. I'm done experimenting. Now I only buy what I will USE UP.
