Re: What are your top 5 D&R trend loves and hates right now?

  • Fun! I'll try!

    Loves:

    1. Butcher block counter tops

    2. Grey walls

    3. Well done gallery walls

    4. Interesting back splash

    5. Burlap

    Hates:

    1. Ombre

    2. Chevron

    3. Spray painting furniture

    4. Matchy- matchy furniture

    5. Anything made of pallets

Haha don't know if those all would be considered "trends". Just what's on my mind about "popular" things (especially on Pinterest) that I like or don't like!

    love:
    1. bright colors, everywhere!

    2. storage baskets on display in shelves: cute and convenient!

    3. tabletop terrariums

    4. linen and burlap

    5. cleverly repurposed stuff.

    hate:
    1. ikat - it was cool the first time i saw it, but i'm over it.

    2. the decorating blogosphere "look" - you know what i'm talking about. it's pretty but where's the personality? ok, i don't hate it because like i said, it's pretty. but everyone seems to copy each other and it all starts to look the same.

    3. storage baskets on display in shelves: god, they're everywhere!

    4. too many decorative candles/candleholders that never get used, especially wall sconces

    5. subway signs / typography signs ...the first five million of them i saw were cool.

  • Oh this could get interesting!

    Love:
    1. Gray (walls, furniture, anything...except food)
    2. Wreaths, yarn if done right.  But I love wreaths.
    3. Subway tile.
    4. Texture. Burlap, wood, concrete, etc.
    5. Flower pots (as different things)

    Hate (yes, really.  HATE)
    1. Sunburst Mirrors, more specifically the ones made out of random junk. Hello hot pink spoon mirror???
    2. Gallery walls and wall words in every. single. room (one or two rooms I will accept.)
    3. Chevron.  I never even got close to the wagon that everyone jumped on for that one.
    4. White cabinets. There are other colors out there people!!! (Some of your kitchens look great with white cabinets)
    5. Ombre.

  • loves: board and batten, gray walls, brightly painted from doors

    hates:subway signs and chevron anything.

  • Love:

    1. Linen. This may be too classic to be a trend, but I love it anyway.

    2. Repurposing furniture. Turn a buffet into a dresser, an armoire into a desk or a kitchen table into a coffee table.

    3. Touches of industrial, as long as it's not overdone. Steampunk is cool, but I wouldn't want to live in a house that felt like it belonged to Edward Scissorhands.

    4. Reclaimed wood

    5. Vintage wallpaper

    Hate:

    1. ikat. I don't get the appeal.

    2. Vinyl stickers. I don't mind it if you like it in your house, but I don't need it in mine.

    3. Spelling out names in nurseries. I don't mind displaying names, but I think there can be other ways to do it other than hanging up wooden letters with ribbon.

    4.  Overly decorated children's birthday parties where everything down to the toilet paper has a themed place card telling you what it is.

    5. Ceiling medallions as wall decor. Not my thing.

  •  Hates:

    1. Slapping together curtains. 9 out of 10 times bedsheets, shower curtains, and two pieces of iron on hem holding two towels together does not a pair of curtains make. I get that it's cheap and easy. However, it only looks great in photoshopped pics not so much IRL. And don't get me started on the dropcloth version.

    2. The word Griege. It' still neutral tan people. No matter which way you cut it! A cutesy name doesn't make it better.

    3. Painted and repurposed furniture. It's okay in moderation. But sometimes I just want something new and pretty dammit! And my style is pretty country and eclectic, but it does go "I shopped my entire LR at my neighbor's garage sale quick."

    4. The need to spray paint everything. Again. Looks great in the blogosphere but IRL there's paint drips and it chips in about 8 seconds. On that same note DIY wreaths. Wreaths are for plant materials people. Not spoons, popsicle sticks, old socks and whatever else!

    Loves:

    1. Cute laundry rooms with color.

    2. A return to a more normal, lived in kitchen design. A little counter clutter is necessary.

    3. Personalized art of the non word variety. DIY is cool here as is repurposing sentimental stuff.

    4. All the cute affordable bedding I see everywhere lately. Along that same note, the mix and match look. What a great way to repurpose what you have.

    5. All the fun playroom I see lately that are still very kid friendly but not adult cringeworthy.

  • I've been around long enough to know that a trend just something that has been around before, but you just discovered it. lol

I've also been around long to realize that I don't really hate anything....some things just aren't my style or anything that I want in my own home, but in the right home, it can be beautiful and perfect.   Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean that it doesn't have merit and shouldn't be appreciated by someone who can appreciate it.

I don't like copycat decorating, which in this age of blogs seems to be an epidemic. ;)

Inspiration is a good thing, but duplicating something that someone put love and thought into, that is personal to them, just doesn't translate into every home.  Put some thought into it and make it your own....let your imagination take it to a new place.

  • Loves:

    1) Grey and yellow together

    2) Orange and Teal together

    3) Usable kitchens

    4) Lived in living rooms (e.g. toys if you have kids, pillows, throws, books,)...not the staged look.

    5) Subway tile

    Hates:

    1) Overdoing the mid-century modern look. Small doses, ok. Too much, oye.

    2) the DIY craze. Maybe this is because i don't have a DIY crafty bone in my body.

    3) Sisal

    4) Painting area rugs/painting faux area rugs on floors...say wha?

    5) Ikat everywhere

  • Loves

    1. Colorful cabinets or islands in a kitchen (specifically aqua, yellow, or distressed woods)

    2. Smart organization (tailoring an unused space to a specific need)

    3. Neutral, clean lined furniture with colorful pillows

    4. Mismatched, used, and antique pieces in a room rather than all new matchy stuff

    5. Exposed wood beams, walls, and wooden architectural detailing (corbels, ceilings, mantles, etc.)

    Hates/Tired Of:

    1. Gray and white color scheme...just so boring to me and it is EVERYWHERE. I just think it lacks individuality.

    2. Giving a "makeover" to junky knick-knacks by spray painting them a bright color

    3. Chalkboard paint. I hate chalk on my hands, the sound of it on the board, and chalk dust isn't good for kids to breathe/be around. That's why schools went to dry erase.

    4. Organization for looks but not function like when someone has all clear glass jars to hold their laundry detergent and unwrapped bars of soap, or "styles" their laundry room with neat stacks of burlap and linen just for looks. Usually these are complete with little chalkboard labels so everyone knows the soap bars in the clear container are, in fact, soap. I'm perfectly okay with a bottle of Tide being out for guests to see.

    5. Subway tile. I just don't see the point of all white/neutral tile. Cleaning spaghetti stains off of white grout just seems awful.

I will not get the phrase fat litter out of my brain!

  • loves:

-eclectic fabrics in different patterns/textures.  Coordinated but not matchy-matchy.  Think Sarah Richardson :)

-grey, I know it's everywhere now, but I freaking love it, pairs so well with so many colors.

-drum shades, never met one I didn't like

-non-cutesy nurseries that can grow with the kid

-bright colors in rooms other than kid rooms.  Turquoise, orange, yellow, bright blues and of course greens.  Pinks even!

    hates:

-people still going with fugly nursery themes: Pooh just won't die!!! And why do gender neutral nurseries have to be jungle or monkey themed?

-wall words, I find most of the poems/sayings people get stuck up on their wall cheesy and/or creepy.  Also, tree decals, no more tree decals!

-white ceramic everything (admittedly i do own some)

-fleece blankets in the living room

    -white countertops

  • Pugz--if you came to my house, you'd understand. DH insists upon living in a fridge and only fleece blankets are warm enough.
  • Likes:

    - bright colors everywhere, especially Turquoise my all-time fav

    - Repurposing old furniture.  We had a house fire a couple years ago and had to buy all new furniture quickly so we bought brand new from a reputable company.  All in all it's held up ok, but I prefer the few "old" pieces that we salvaged from the fire.  Plus I hate have the same furniture as everyone else with our decor taste.

    - Wall galleries

    - Organization mania - I'm slowly overhauling every closet, drawer, cabinet in the house and I've found so many good ideas online/pinterest.

    - White cabinets - LOVE, love that they're FINALLY making an apperance in the frozen tundra that I live in.

    Dislike:

    - The gray/greige obsession
