So, if you feed your cat wet food?

How do you go on vacation?

We go out of town quite often and have a friend come and visit her once every 2 days. We could maybe get someone to come once a day if we had to, but definitely not twice a day.

If she still gets some dry food, would you just rely on that while on vacation?

Re: So, if you feed your cat wet food?

  • I've often wondered the same thing! We're out of town several times a year, and we live in the middle of no where. No commercial pet sitters can come here (we're never in their area), and we only have one neighbor within a couple miles. Asking them to come twice a day is too much. We use timer feeders when we're out of town (actually, all the time) - they open every twelve hours. They've never malfunctioned, but we have a few different types - so even if one stopped working, they'd only miss one meal.

I'd love to feed wet food as well, but with our schedules it just isn't possible right now I'm afraid.

  • For us, they still get dry too so while we are gone, the wet is once a day instead of twice. I might have someone come twice a day next time though because the neighbor girl does pet care and she's close... plus I want someone to keep a good eye on my three since two were just added in January (we're going away in June).

  • Someone mentioned on the board before that wet food can sit out for something like up to 12 hours. So if someone came once in the morning, they could put out the entire day's worth of food without having to come again for dinnertime. If you freeze the second half, then it's even better, since it will take time to thaw and warm up while it's sitting out.

BUT, since my furry felines still get 1/2-3/4 of their intake from dry food, I just leave instructions to feed that, rather than trying to show someone else how I like their wet food given. :)

  • We have someone feed them wet once a day.

ETA: even if we did not feed wet I would want someone to check on them every day.  There are lots of minor medical issues that can become fatal within 24 hours, as well as dangerous issues that can pop up with the house.

  • They just eat dry food while we're gone (they eat both regularly). We do have someone check on them but it actually never occurred to me to have our neighbors give them wet food while we were gone since for so long all they ate was dry food anyway.

  • Ours usually get wet food twice a day and kibble twice a day.  We don't free feed.

If we're gone for more than 36 hours, we have a cat sitter come in once a day to give them wet food (and water and to clean their litter and to let them know they're loved).  For less than that, we feed them wet food RIGHT before we leave even if it isn't "time" yet.  Either way, we leave lots of kibble (which probably is an awesome perk for my little piggycats).

  • We had someone come and feed him morning and night when we were gone last since he's on wet food only. He's a little whiner and totally needs it broken into two meals. If we go away for an extended period of time, we will have either my mom or grandmother stay at the house during that time so they don't have to go out of their way to do the feedings.

I know other people who board instead.
