Housewarming Gift Suggestions?

We have been invited to a housewarming party.  I would like to bring a gift but I'm not sure what to bring.  Do you guys have any suggestions?

I do not know the host well, he is a coworker of DH.  This is his first house.  While we live in the city, they have moved to a rural farmhouse.  Any help or ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions?

  • A gift card to Lowe's or Home Depot is never wrong for a housewarming :)  If you prefer to give things, a bucket of some kind with a hammer, nails, Command strips, Magic Erasers, paper towels, etc is good, too.
  • I think a gift card to Lowe's or Home Depot would be great. Another idea that I love it large, fluffy, white towels. TJ Maxx has a wonderful selection.

  • I tend to not move candles when I move, but that's just me.  I loved getting housewarming gifts of jar candles.  I also loved getting candy dishes because IMO you never have enough of those to put snacks, candy, nuts around the house when entertaining.
  • gift card, wine, plant.  One thing on the giftcard, if they are really rural see what stores they have.  When I lived in the sticks we would get gc's to Target, HD, and Kroger.  All of those were more than 45 mins away.  So while appreciated, they weren't as convenient especially when moving.

Another thought- if you have AAA go and see if there are any guidebooks for the area.  It might be cheesy and stuff they already know about, but it would be something free and thoughtful to put with something else.

  • Hi!  If they have children or are expecting a baby... I would get one of the"Tot Finder" decals for their bedroom windows and inside bedroom doors.  The fire department usually has those for free.

I also like the PP suggestion re: AAA guide books - and would give these in addition to a bottle of wine, gc, plant etc.

  • Thanks everyone!  Maybe we'll do the Home Depot gift card with a few small things in a big mason jar or other suitable candy dish alternative jar.  While they are rural (35-40 minute drive to the nearest big city) they drive into the city everyday for work so it shouldn't be too inconvenient for them to use the gift card.  Thanks, you have really helped me out!

  • My favorite housewarming gifts we received were gift cards for grocery stores. Everyone needs food and if they have acquired additional space now they can stock up at Costco or Sams Club etc..

  • Gift cards are great - Lowes, Home Depot, Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  Picture frames or plants are also a nice idea.

  • I like giving customized address stamps like these, but if you don't know the person well it might not be as appropriate.

  • Did they go to a bigger house...I'm thinking if they have a new bathroom maybe an accessory for that is nice

I like giving hand soap like from Bath and Body works as part of a gift, like they have a kitchen one you could pair with kitchen towels and if the budget allows, a neutral color, maybe monogrammed hand towel (like 7.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond) with another hand soap.

Or, Rival makes a little crock pot called the little dipper. I think that make a nice gift either with a dip mix or a recipe.

  • I'd do a basket with green cleaning products: seventh generation or method bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner, floor cleaner, etc.

  • I was in the same situation as you last year. What I did was bring a big, beautiful cookie bouquet to the housewarming party. The host absolutely loved it, and she opened them right away!
