Crossfitters, what shoes do you wear?

I have been wearing an old pair of running shoes and they work "ok" (they are newtons, so sort of minimalist) but the biggest problem I have is they are too loose (which is good for running) in the toe area, meaning they are 1 size too big so my feet move around in them when doing box jumps, etc. Should I just buy a size more fitted since we still do a lot of running WODs? (We do 1-2 running WODs a week) Or get another brand of minimalist shoes? Thanks!

Re: Crossfitters, what shoes do you wear?

  • I'm interested in other people's answers too, because right now I do CrossFit in my old running shoes, though they fit me just fine and I haven't had any problems with them. The main reason I might want different shoes is because I tend to put too much weight in my toes and not enough in my heels doing lifts and I think the padding in the running shoes is not helping. Some people in my box change into special lifting shoes, but I'm not sure what kinds they are.
  • I wear nike free iD shoes. They're pretty awesome!

  • I have CF shoes and I have running shoes.  I run in Nike Frees and CF in Inov-8s, which are minimalist shoes.  We usually only ever run 200s or 400s in the WODs, so the Inov-8s have been fine (although I wouldn't "run" in them b/c I still need a bit more cushion).

Anything that is flat should be fine.  Traditional running shoes are  a problem because of the way they are angled, you can have trouble getting good form when you lift.  I used to just wear Converse, until I decided to be a cool kid and succumb to peer pressure and get the Inov-8s.  But they're fun and red, so...

ETA: I don't know the WOD before I get to the box, so I cannot change my shoe decision based upon the WOD unless I bring both pairs, and I'm too lazy to do that.

  • I have a pair of inov-8's (because I got a deal on them) and a pair of Vivo Barefoots.  Still, when we do something with significant running, I run less tentatively in my Saucony Mirages (they are more of a "minimalist Saucony" not too cushy).

  • I CF in New Balance Minimus shoes.  I love them.  I'm a big fan of New Balance in general.  We don't do a ton of running, but I've done several WODs with 5-7 400m repeats and they've been fine.

Inov-8s are too narrow for my wide Sasquatch feet.

I can't pick what I wear based on the WOD, because I go at 5:30 am and it's usually a surprise.

  • I wear Nike frees. My box doesn't post the WOD so it's always a surprise so wearing different shoes for different workouts wouldn't work. I like the Frees because they are pretty minimal but still great for running. The longest we do for running is a couple miles so wearing non running shoes wouldn't be a big deal.

Plus they come in awesome colors and I get the iD ones with my name on them which excites me to no end.

  • My box will post the WOD the night before so I can pick my footwear based on the activity. I have Vibram 5 fingers, Reebok zigs, Reebok Real Flex. I want inov-8's too!

  • I have a pair of merrell pace gloves I wear when it's super cold and I need to be able to wear socks. Otherwise, I wear my vibram fivefingers. The Merrells have a Vibram sole but it's thicker than my VFFs. I also have a pair of new balance minimus but they aren't as flexible as my other two options so I mostly just wear them for running errands.

  • I wear Vibram Fivefingers except for the days that there is over 1.5 miles running in the WOD then I wear running shoes. The VFF's have really helped me become more aware about where I'm placing my weight (heels or toes).

Wow, really? I have Peppermint Patty feet and they fit okay (although I do have to loosen the laces enough to get my foot into the hole!)

  • I have 3 pair of Inov8s (clearly I have a problem) and 1 pair of VFF. I love to WOD in both but it rains too much here to wear my VFF very often. Although, I would love to wear them much, much more. I find the Inov8s wide actually and I have a fairly average foot. I am tempted to get the newer Reebok CF shoes but they are super wide and I'm not sure that would end well. So from this point forward, I will probably just feed my Inov8 addiction and buy another pair. LOL

Yeah. I wear a wide width running shoe, and even that is debatably too narrow.  I have an extremely wide forefoot and small bunions, so shoes are a big challenge.  NB has never steered me wrong--they have really wide toe boxes.

  • Nike Free TR. Got em on sale, which was part of the motivation, but I love them for CFing. I see a lot of Nike Frees, Merrels, NB Minimus and Innov8.
