Hello! Trying to start a flower bed.
Hello I have never posted here. Do I need to intro? I have never done a flower bed and was looking for some advice. Anyone in Pennsylvania? Zone 6 for flowers.
Re: Hello! Trying to start a flower bed.
Give us some more details- are you starting a new bed where there is lawn? How large of an area? Sun or shade? I'm not in Pennsylvania but I can give you some pointers- I'm in zone 5b.

"Severe truth is expressed with some bitterness.
I would add some bags of compost rather then top soil unless the soil looks really bad. My only concern for the area you describe is that is may get very hot if it is between a side walk and a wall but I have a garden like that and it is great just make sure to mulch everything well when you are done planting.
I'm not sure at what time your afternoon sun starts but if it is early afternoon I would try daylillies, you can choose early to late bloomers to get a longer bloom time. Another great easy long lasting perennial is black eyed susans, these are typically full sun but I have this kind in my garden and it has self sown in some shady spots and still blooms.
Heucheras are very easy to grow and have foliage in everything from pink to lime green so they would look good all season. For spring Columbines would be pretty. In the fall you could add some spring bulbs.
Have fun!
