Recommend your dog's collar.

Good morning, all!

Well, Jovie's collar finally broke this morning, so I am on the hunt for a new one. She is a Siberian husky, two years old, and about 45 lbs of solid energy.

Suggestions/recommendations?

TIA!

ETA: I guess I should've been a bit more specific- oops! This is the fourth collar she has broken in a year. She slips out of everything, and when she does, she runs. Looking for recommendations on very strong collars, or if there are any types that others have had success with for dogs who pull like there's no tomorrow.

Re: Recommend your dog's collar.

  • My dogs wear solid-color martingale collars from Petco. Forgot the exact brand.
  • Honestly, I just go tot he pet store and find the collar that I like best/think is prettiest.

I do prefer the non-buckle claps (like on a belt). I typically buy something the dogs can get out of if they end up stuck on something.

For walks I use a prong collar, but my dogs and I are trained in how to use them correctly.

That's how I got into the predicament I am in now ;)

  • We have collars from teenytinycollars.com. They're adorable and have held up really well.
  • If you're worried about your dog slipping the collar - definitely go with a martingale style.  The were initially designed for sighthound type breeds (head smaller than neck).  I use one for my dog, but I don't leave it on her when she's unattended.

  • We have a few collars, leashes, and harnesses from Earth Dog (http://www.earthdog.com). I've only bought the solid hemp ones, but they hold up very well through wear and washing. They make martingale styles as well since slipping out is an issue.

Our coonhound is really adept at backing out of a collar, so we ended up just going with a body harness to make sure he's safely leashed. When we didn't use a harness, we did a double collar, one attached to the leash and then a light cotton one with his tags on it just in case he did escape.

  • I'd recommend a martingale collar as well. I've got a greyhound, so that's all we can use with his little pin head.  I've got a Petco one and some cute ones from etsy, but the style of collar means it's much harder to break than one with a plastic connector.
  • We like the Easy Walk harness, but for martingale collars, we love collarmania.com.

We have the collars made with a separate ring for their tags and it prevents our dogs from slipping them.

  • I would absolutely recommend a tubular nylon limited slip collar from either White Pine Outfitters or Mes Amis.  They are both great for fur like on a husky and when fitted properly a dog can't slip out of them so they are very safe.

  • Lupine brand collars will replace chewed/broken/fraying collars free of charge. I have only this brand now for collars/leashes/harnesses, and have been very happy with them. They're sturdy and come in a lot of cute patterns as well as solid colors, and I've found them sold at my vet office and also some of the pet supply stores around me -- they're also available online. Replacement is just taking the collar to anywhere that sells one and they do an exchange on the spot.

  • Our dog wears a 2" martingale collar.  He has never slipped out of it and it is very sturdy (I paid $$$ for it, but it was worth it and has his name on it).

  • Our puppies have a wonderful habit of chewing their collars off of each other. Our boxer wears a no-slip collar from Petsmart. She is famous for slipping out of normal ones. (granted, when she does, she comes and sits right next to us, but still, it made me nervous) When we upgraded her, we got one for our Husky as well, thinking it would be better to be safe than sorry. We came downstairs the next morning to find he had tried to chew it off and gotten his lower jaw stuck in the loop that tightens the collar when pulled on. We rushed him to the vet, and he was ok, but it could have been worse, and scared us. The boxer cant get to hers because of her short muzzle.

Just something to think about when shopping. : )

  • We love our fabric collar from www.thecollarshop.org. It's custom made and very durable. It's our Flyball collar, so it sees a lot of action.

  • The martingale collar we bought at Petsmart is great for walks, but easily comes off during rough play- I guess it just slips over his head - which is why I'm in the market for another now. My husky was playing with his "girlfriend" (neighbor's dobie) on Sunday and all of the sudden I realize his collar is gone... we looked all over the yard and can't find it.

I get all of my collars from this shop.  When my dog ran away for 2 and a half months his martingale collar stayed on the whole time and was still in decent condition when I got him back.  You can't beat that!!

  • Another vote for Earth Dog.  Dot's been in the same collar since we got her in 2009.  She's not exactly a fierce puller, but they're EXTREMELY sturdy.  The only thing I've noticed is that I do have to check the tightness once a week or so.  They tend to slip a little bit, so if I forget to re-tighten for a couple weeks, they get pretty big.
