Cheap backsplash ideas

We are trying to update our kitchen without spending too much money or spending too much time on it. We have sanded and restained the cabinets, bought new hardware for them, and we plan to paint the laminate countertops (since we can't afford to buy anything new at the moment). There is white 4 x4 tile as the backsplash now, expect there is a section where they didn't put it and another section where they cut it for the microwave above the range.

So, I'm wondering if you have any ideas for a backsplash that would be cheap to do the entire area or go over the existing tile. I saw some metal sheets at Home Depot that might look kinda cool.

For the record we hope to reface the cabinets, get new countertops, new sink, and new tile floor, but we don't really have a timeframe as to when it might get done. So, it could be in a few years or 10...who knows. Or, one step may be done and not the others. Thanks.

Re: Cheap backsplash ideas

  • White 4x4 tile sounds pretty livable...can you just find matching tile and finish up the sections that are untiled?  That would probably be cheapest and least effort.  I have seen someone on this board use that tin-tile looking stuff, and I think there's even some of it that's paintable, so they might chime in.

  • What about that ...bead board,  or is it called wayne's coating.  I saw that the other day on a kitchen blog and it looked FAB.  You can buy it at Home Depot and cut it to fit. I would guess it only comes in white but it looks great.

Wainscoting. And that would be pretty cool. Use a tough paint so it is easy to clean.
