If you have a cloth rug in your kitchen.....

does it get icky fast?

If not how do you clean it or is it even an issue?

My work triangle is an octagon shape so small scatter rugs don't look quite right.

I have a bigger seagrass one there now but it's 7 years old and looking gross. It's been hosed and steam cleaned beyond it's prime. :) It's also tan and blends in with the floor...does nothing for the space. It's also rough and practically gives Cube rugburn.

I'm thinking I'll just grab a cheaper one at Target I like, hose off/vaccuum as necessary and leave it that.

Re: If you have a cloth rug in your kitchen.....

  • I have three rag rugs that I bought at crate ad barrel years ago. I wash them in our washing machine like once a month. They come out super clean, and look new each time. I love them. One is in front of our sink, one in front of the oven and one in front of the refrigerator.

I have been wanting to buy new ones in a different color but I can't seem to find them for a decent price and the right size. They have to be cotton to be able to go in our machine and I would never buy kitchen mats/rugs that can't go in the laundry.

  • I have cloth-ish rugs in the kitchen and they are kind of on their last leg.  I can't have anything with a pile because my middle pooch likes to shred them.  I really like the Gel-pro mats (but not the price).  Kohls has a knock off as does Amazon for about $40 that I am going to try because they are soft but you can just mop them.  Here's the link to the Amazon one.

  • Yeah..size is my issue too.

Definitely has to be washable here too. Which is why if I go bigger maybe I can laundromat it a few times a year (I work right next to one) Or at least take the hose to it outside. It's also why I'm thinking of just going Target cheap. It'll get wrecked eventually in this house.

  • I have two 2'x3' and one 3'x5' and they all fit in my machine at the same time. No need to go to the laundromat.

Mine are like these, but in a color that matches the tile floor. I want to get them in cobalt blue.

  • I was contemplating an indoor/outdoor rug for our dining room until the girls get older. Maybe something like that would be easier to spot clean?

  • I have 2 small rugs, one in front of the oven and one in front of the sink. I think the cleaning lady throws them in the washing machine. No idea but they are never dirty so she must do something.

I do want new rugs just because one is fraying from one of my dogs who likes to scrunch it up in a ball and drag it around the house (this is the least of the weird things he does...). I can't decide, either, on what to get. I'm really considering those gel mats. They aren't the most beautiful things but the tan would blend in with our tile and I think I would like the cushiness of them.

  • I have an indoor outdoor Dash and Albert rug that I either take outside and hose down or just throw in the washer. They say they can be bleached, though I haven't tried it. I also have one of their woven cotton rugs by our garage door that washes/dries well too.
  • I'm using a painted/sealed foam playmat. Cushy and easy to clean.
  • Glad someone posted about this, our new kitchen is way bigger than our current one and I was thinking about making a braided cloth rug to put in the open space but wasn't sure how it would work.  What 's the biggest rug anyone's had luck washing in a home washer?
