I need some help deciding between a 5x8 rug or an 8x10 rug for our living room area (those are the two size options that are available for the rug I want). Our house is set up so that you walk into the living room/dining room/kitchen, which is all one room. The space is long and somewhat narrow. Currently I have a 5x8 rug for the living room area and the front feet of the loveseat and the two club chairs sit on the outside edge of the rug, with the back feet on the bare floor. This works ok, but I don't love that the furniture isn't totally on the rug. The rug runs the long way in front of the loveseat, as is usual I think.
But here's my question, would it be odd to have an 8x10 rug that ran the short way (with the furniture all on it)? Because of the living room size and configuration, it wouldn't fit the way the current rug is. Sorry I don't have a PIP--this is hard to explain! I'll try to add one tonight.
Also, if I went with the 8x10, it would take up a fair portion of the entire room (about a third of the room). It's a 400 square foot room, but part of it is divided off for the kitchen behind an open peninsula/counter. Do you think it would look too big?
