Spray Paint Brass/Gold?

It's been a few weeks since I've been here... I guess buying a house can do that to ya! Don't get me started on how a day after we closed both my Jeep (that I bought brand new in high school and was my 'ol baby lol) AND our brand new Ford Focus got destroyed by an uninsured driver...grrrrr. Stress much?

Anyway, now that we have gotten rid of the purplish blue walls, the next thing on my list is the gold light fixtures/chandeliers .  I was thinking of just spray painting them flat black or bronze until we feel comfortable investing in the perfect ones. Anyone have any experience doing this? How long do you think it will last?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Spray Paint Brass/Gold?

  • I haven't done this, but my sister sprayed the brass fixtures in her house with hammered black (I think the brand was Rustoleum?) spray paint and it came out really nice.  You can't even tell that the fixture used to be another color.  Hers has been hanging for a good 7-8 years now.

  • it is very easy to do. as with any spray paint project, light coats with them layered is the best way to go after you tape off the parts you don't want paint on. on light fixtures it will last a VERY LONG time b/c you don't touch/handle them hardly ever. if you want to better ensure it on fixtures that might be table top and have a higher likelihood of handling, you can spray an acrylic coat over it (comes in different finishes, like the paint), but i have never found that necessary, personally.

  • I did this in my kitchen because I hated our fixtures but I am not ready to commit to buying new ones yet. I just got a can of textured nickel spray paint and went to town. Heck I only just wiped the visible dirt off of them and didn't bother wiping off the grease from cooking. It stuck on there just fine and looks a million times better than the brass crap!
