If you've painted a metal exterior door

did you use a roller or brushes? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Re: If you've painted a metal exterior door

  • I used a small foam roller intended for smooth surfaces. I primed it and had to do several coats of our paint to get an even coverage.
  • I used a foam brush.

My PSA for you...be sure you do it when there is no direct sunlight on it.  I did ours and the sun came around a little while later and the paint dried unevenly from the door heating up.

  • I used a foam roller on the inside of ours and a short nap roller on the outside, because there are a couple of dents and a little texture on the paint (and a satin finish) masks them pretty well.

  • Fortunately, it's a new door that hasn't been hung yet so I can paint it on our garage. If it's new (not a lot of dirt and wear yet) do you think I still need to prime it?

  • We took ours off the hinges, painted it in the garage with a brush in the grooves and a roller on the rest.  Two coats of primer and three coats of paint for an even finish.
