PIP - Ugly corner of front yard transformation.....

I am so proud of myself! I am almost done building the rock wall, I think it looks so pretty and really makes my new Hyacinths pop! I'll be brining in a ton of dirt to back fill and then I will start planting my shade plants. So exciting!!

Did you cut a lot of tree roots? Or did you mound up a bunch of dirt behind that wall? Or both?

  • I did have to cut away a couple of thick roots after digging my trench. I haven't mounded any dirt behind the wall yet. I am going to have some delivered and will back fill it with that. I really hope tree roots do not destroy all of my hard work over time!

Cutting small roots affects the tree's ability to take up water. Cutting large roots affects the tree's ability to remain standing. Dumping extra soil on top of the roots also has a negative effect on the health of the tree. So at least from the perspective of tree health and risk management, everything is negative.

The tree won't destroy all your hard work, but you might destroy the tree.

  • NB - that tree is a locust with roots of steel! I don't think we could destroy it!! However, we do have plans to take it down sooner rather than later, it is interfering with wires for both us and our neighbor and it getting WAY too tall. It's going to cost a small fortune i'm sure.

  • That wall looks great!  Nice job.
