cats and litter box...

Ok, question about litter box use. We have 2 cats, and 2 litter boxes, one on each side of the toilet in our bathroom. (we use flushable litter) In the larger litter box, our cats (we're not sure which one or if it is both) keep peeing over the side in the back near the wall. We have tried moving the box, up against the wall, away from the wall and putting things in the way behind the box to try to keep them out of the very back of the box, but they keep peeing over the side. They only do it on this box, not the other one. Are they spraying the wall? What else can we try? I am tired of cleaning pee off the floor...

Re: cats and litter box...

  • What are you cleaning the pee with? I think Nature's Miracle works on tile, but you'd have to check the bottle.  I am wondering if one cat peed there on accident and now they are peeing there because they can still smell it.

  • Can you switch the litterboxes? Or maybe try using a litterbox with walls? This is what I have: http://www.breezeforcats.com/
  • Is it a covered box?  I would probably switch to top entry boxes if they'll use them.

  • Are the boxes too small for your cats? I'm sorry, I'm not too much of a help, none of my cats ever peed over the sides of the boxes. (I guess I'm lucky my guys aim down, lol)
  • Ack!  I missed the flushable litter, which is so so so bad for the environment.  Most water treatment facilities don't really use sufficient stuff to break down pet feces.  There used to be a regular who explained it better than I can.  It will also DESTROY your own plumbing.

We had a plumber who gave us a lecture on that (our tenant upstairs was using it).

  • We got a larger and higher back/side box to deal with a similar situation. Our cat was not spraying, she just did not squat quite right sometimes. If there was anything it (the smaller box) she would not step near it and would end up squished on/over the edge and not squatted quite right. Larger boxes with higher sides completely resolved the problem.

  • Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will have to try cleaning with something like Nature's Miracle to see if that helps. This litterbox is the larger of our two and while not giant I think it is pretty big and I keep it pretty full to satisfy our cat who likes to dig. I will have to look into a box with walls, but I'm not sure if they will use it, they can be pretty particular.

As for the flushable litter, I know I know, I have been meaning to stop. Thanks for the extra push =)
