Does late afternoon/evening sun count?

I have a corner of my garden near the fence that gets sun from about 4pm- sunset. Does that have to count as shade only?

Also, if something is labeled morning light only, I assume it's because it needs light but can't take the blaring afternoon sun, so could that fill that spot?

I'd call that part sun. What kind of plant is it? It may work, but there are other things to consider, such as soil moisture and radiant heat.

I'd try it. If it doesn't work, you could always move it.

  • I haven't tried, but I've heard Hellebores hate to be moved. They do fine in pots, so I'd keep it in the pot until you decide for sure. Mine are under an apple tree with dappled sun in the morning and get full shade from the house in the afternoons, if that helps. I don't think they need a lot of light, just some protection from the sun and a little bit of a wind break if you can manage it.

I also get confused by the shade/part shade/part sun distinctions. All day sun I've got a handle on though ;)

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman

Yes I've heard that too.  The hellebore division I got from a local garden club sale did not survive but the bare root ones I got in the mail finally bloomed for the first time this year after 2 years of growing.  I love hellebores and hope to get a few more this year.  Mine get a dappled morning sunlight and an hour or two of afternoon light.

  • I've moved my hellebores like 3 times.  I've very indecisive.  :)  I haven't lost one yet (and I'm not even all that great with watering-until-established)
