All of my work pants are too big. Tailor ?s

I have about 6 pairs of pants that I need to have taken in one size or more.  How much does getting work trousers taken in usually run?  I know its about $5 to get jeans hemmed, is this more or less work?

I know this is a good problem to have, but it's frustrating.

  • Taking in a size is generally a lot more involved than just hem. It's not only the waist but also part of the sides needs to be taken in.
  • My tailor charges 12.00 for that service.
  • Definitely more. Unless it's just a little nip at the waist, you're talking about basically reconstructing the pants. Also depends on what the fabric is, and how easy it is to work with.
  • I can't believe it only cost you $5 to get jeans hemmed.  I think I paid $15 the last time I got jeans hemmed.  Sounds like I need to look for a new tailor...

But to answer your original question, yes, it will be a lot more expensive.  A good tailor will remove the waistband, take in the pants, shorten the waistband and put it back on.

  • to me it depends on how much your pants cost/are worth.  I just bought a new pair in a smaller size of my favorite black pants = $60.  I have only had dresses/skirts altered and taking in a lined skirt cost me about $15.  my thought is pants would be more.  I would take them and get a quote from 2 different places.
  • It'll probably run about $20 a pair. They have to remove almost the whole waistband, then take in the side seams and/or the seat (back rise) depending on how much needs to come in. Then also take in the waistband and reattach.
