Help with this space, WWYD?

The quality of this pic is terrible bc I took it with my iphone. :)

I came home last night and DH had moved the TV to the top area. It used to sit on top of the table that you see with the "stuff" on it. He insists that it is safe up there and is going to anchor it because we have a LO. DH thinks I should just put LO's toys under there...like her kitchen. The thought is nice, but Ill have nightmares of the tv crashing down on her. :)

Anyway, because he really wants it there, I cant figure out what to do below. Get a small table that fits and just put pretty little things on it?  Buy a nice cabinet that will fit the space and use it for storage? Have DH build doors to cover the space and store toys in there? What would you ladies do? It seems like such a weird open area to me and I just dont know what to do. I really like the TV there because I could put cute things in the above area. I had a beautiful door that I cut down and replaced the windows with mirrors and now I have nowhere to put it. Boohoo!

Thanks for the help!

Re: Help with this space, WWYD?

  • What is DHs reasoning for moving the tv up there?

The use of the space really depends on whether or not you need additional storage. If you do, I like the idea of building some shelving in and either using pretty baskets or even better, have DH do doors to cover up the lower section. Maybe even something that will allow you to put the speakers "tucked in" to the left and right of the open space below.

Overall, the area looks a little cluttered. And IMO, decorative items look better above the tv, not below, so if he is not interested in moving the tv back to its original location, then I would consider closing up that lower area altogether.

  • His reasoning is terrible. It looks "cool". A friend was over and they moved it up. I kind of agree that just covering up the lower area would be better because it does look a little cluttered! I just hope he can close it up nicely. Sometimes when he does things himself they arent up to my standards...just sayin' haha

  • That totally sounds like a valid reason. If you're my H too lol.

I would see if you could build little doors and then put some shelves in it to hide clutter. I know my DS could take over a room in a heartbeat. You can put DVDs on the shelves, baskets for toys, etc.

I can't see the picture (while I type this), so I'm flying by the seat of my pants here.

I think putting shelves in and then doors is a great idea! Why do guys just do these things and think the cool factor is reason enough? Arghhhh And if Im being honest, it doesnt look cool. Haha

I'm VERY short, so I'd probably get a crick in my neck trying to watch that TV up there lol.

I bet that Ana White probably has some plans for a door you could alter to make something to screw into the wall with some hinges. Good luck!

  • I think the TV is too high for optimal viewing. But since the man put it there...I guess it will have to stay. I also agree that the stuff under it looks cluttered. So I'll vote for closing it in, I recommend you pay someone to build shelving and custom doors so it looks intentional, not like an afterthought.
  • I would wait before doing anything about it, and would do my best to convince him that it is too high to view comfortably.   It would give me headaches and neck problems for sure.

It is going to turn into one of those "If you give a mouse a cookie..." things, where to view it comfortably he will want an ugly recliner, etc., and before you know it, it is a room that you don't enjoy.   I have seen it happen, many times.  Not in my home, but people close to me.

this is actually a very valid concern of mine and I'm glad you said it. I thought maybe I was digging for excuses!
