Fencing your yard - DIY?

Our upcoming project is to have our yard fenced. Who here as done it themselves? How hard was it? Would you do it yourself again, or hire someone?

Any tips or advice? We will be doing mostly dark chain link, with nicer fencing on the sides of the yard.

Thanks!

Re: Fencing your yard - DIY?

  • We installed our own fence.  We have a 6' wooden privacy fence and had to do 2 long sides plus the front on either side of our house.  We set our (metal) posts in concrete (we live in Tornado Alley) and put up the pickets individually rather than buying panels.  It wasn't that hard, and I would do it again (although I would devote 1-2 full weekends to it and get it done rather than dragging it out like we did with this fence).  I'm not sure how much easier/harder chain link is to put up.

  • This was on the short list of things we didn't DIY. Our back property line was pretty thickly wooded, with a number of mature trees.  We didn't want to fight with the roots to get the fence posts in.  It took a crew 2 days to do, so I think I'm glad I didn't attempt it myself.
  • We had a chain link fence installed at our previous home. It cost approx $3000 and worth every penny (2 long sides and half the size in the back and we hooked onto our neighbors other side). Good luck if you DIY it yourself. I give you credit for considering!
  • There are a lot of great tutorials on how to build a fence properly on youtube. I would check them out and see if you think its something you guys can handle.

*We built our own fence with my FIL help. He built his own house. So we where in good hands on the knowledge end. I don't know if it would have went so smoothly without him.

Jennylove, It sure is nice isn't it? LOL I don't know how my H and I would survive owning a home, without FIL sage wisdom. :) I like old people.
