Inaugural Nike Women's Half coming to DC in 2013

I just got an email that there will be an Inaugural Nike Women's half marathon in DC in Spring 2013.  I remember there were a group of nesties who ran the Nike Women's half and full marathon in San Fran last year.  How was it?  Was it well organized?  A hot mess?  Would you run an inaugural race in DC?  The email only said "Details Coming Soon" and then had a link to FB.  Does anyone have any more info on this or any thoughts?

Re: Inaugural Nike Women's Half coming to DC in 2013

  • I don't know anything about the SF race, but the Nike women's race is one I've always wanted to run. If it's coming to DC, I could totally do it!!!

Would you mind posting the FB link? pretty pretty please?

  • I did the full last year.  It was well organized to an extent.  The first half was fine-but most of the runners were in the half marathon.  So, once they finished, the second half of the race was pretty empty.  And if you were not Team in training-you were s^&t...I would be running with maybe 8 or 9 others around me-the coaches were motivating all the team in training runners-but literally didn't say a word to me or the guy I was running with.  And that happened several times.  The expo was small.  The crowd support was ok-not fantastic. I wanted to get a shirt that said Nike WOmens 26.2-they didn't make any.  They made Nike Womens Marathon 13.1... It isn't the worse race, but it isn't one that I would do again.

    ...

Well, it looks like I might become a half fanatic next spring, as there are THREE halfs that I want to run, and will probably be on sequential weekends.

I've heard this from a lot of races, and witnessed it while cheering on some friends at MCM.  That sucks.  I mean I understand they are part of the team and they "pay" through raising money to have that type of support, but seriously, how hard is to to add something like "keep it up girl in the pink shirt" or something to other runners right beside them?

I know this is flameable, and team-in-training is for a good cause, but I still can't help thinking of the chicken nugget runners post whenever I see anything related to team in training. Embarrassed

  • It was more annoying than anything else.  I also think I would have been perfectly happy with doing the half.  The got the same swag-and it seemed like the race is more catered to half marathon runners anways.  I think the DC race would be alot of fun.

this - I should have just run the half instead of the full.

I don't think it was well organized, especially for an event hosted by such a large company.  the expo was a mess.

Not yet.  The FB page looks exactly like the email.  It simply says "Spring 2013 Details Coming Soon."  Hopefully by liking it, I'll be updated on the details whenever they decided to add them. :)

One of the best race moments I've ever had was from this year's RnR USA half, when a group of TnT passed me (struggling) on The Hill. One of the TnT runners commented on my Irish car bomb shirt and said "You ARE the bomb. Keep it up!". We ran astride briefly and talked about running as a form of therapy when we lost our mothers to cancer. It was touching, that someone who had raised so much money to have her moment in the race spent those moments giving me my moment of determination.

  •  How was it?Was it well organized?  A hot mess?  Would you run an inaugural race in DC?  I've done the 1/2 for the past two years. I may run it again this year since a close friend gets free entries.

Last year, the start was a giant clusterfvck. Despite this, I saw the announcement for the DC 1/2 in 2013, and will probably sign up to run it barring calendar conflicts or baby #2.

    Both :)

  • If you're looking for a great all women's half marathon in the DC area, you should consider the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon to benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center on April 28, 2013 in Columbia, Maryland.  Registration is open now for this well-run, wonderfully empowering event, and TriColumbia has been producing endurance events for 30 years. TriColumbia produces 2 other Iron Girl events too; the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon and the Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon. Plus, TriColumbia is a non-profit 501c3, so a majority of the entry fee is tax deductible! Check it out at http://www.tricolumbia.org/events/?eid=12
  • Love the Iron Girl! I am going to stay away from the Nike this year. Innagural races always have issues and races in DC are so freaking crowded.
  • I would love to do the race, but I might wait until it's in its second year.  Hopefully by then they'll work out a lot of the kinks.  But, if they consult with the MCM people, they should be able to pull it off without a hitch.
