Uniform color scheme or independent rooms?

My H and I are closing on our first home in about 3 weeks.  I love the look of a uniform color scheme - i.e., lots of white molding with taupe or light gray walls - but I'm worried it's a bit too "done" of a look vs. a more homey style where each room has an independent color scheme.  My other thought is the neutral look in the halls/stairway, with the rooms on one side of the foyer painted in hues from the same blue family with a green on the other side.  Bedrooms I consider separate since they've got doors that close vs. large open archways.

Any thoughts?

Re: Uniform color scheme or independent rooms?

  • We used one of benjamin color historic color palettes and did the rooms in different colors in the palette so that although one room may be green and the next gold, they still coordinate.

That's more like what we did, but I didn't really think of it as "homey" vs. a particular "look."  I just like colors on the walls, and thought a neutral in the center hall was the best way to do it.

This is the paint color scheme that we used.

I like that idea, I'll have to look into it!

Yeah I was having trouble putting it into words.  I love the colors you used, they're really relaxing.

  • You'll have to figure out which you prefer; it's a personal question we can't answer for you.

Try collecting photos on Pinterest.  You'll notice you're repeatedly drawn to the same things over and over, ideally either colors or a monochrome look.

A word to the wise if you've never lived anywhere you could paint before: you may find painting your walls neutral will be a nice canvas for changing accessories through the seasons and years.

  • My downstairs is pretty uniform. Most of the colors are from the same chip. The sunroom is brighter than the rest, but it still goes w/ the other colors. However, upstairs the rooms are independent.

The color you selected are wonderful.

We are facing the same question as OP. I wondering if using different colors in the bedrooms will be odd since its a single story slab home. I guess as long as we stay in the same hue it will work well.

  • I am a neutral girl who likes to do colorful accessories as Tarheels mentioned.
  • I do each room independently but I do make sure it flows well.
  • Our new home has all of the rooms the same color, and I like it.  Depends on the house, too.  But yes, with neutrals you can switch things up whenever you want without having to worry about repainting.  I hate painting, so it also depends on how you feel about doing it.
