What do you have above your kitchen cabinets??

I would love to see pics if you can post them.  I dont want it to be cluttered looking, I really just want a touch of design.  Thanks

Re: What do you have above your kitchen cabinets??

  • I've been wondering the same thing. Our new kitchen will have space above the cabinets and I have no idea how to decorate it. I did find this picture during my searching and thought it was pretty.

  • Dust.lol

We actually raised the cabinets and put in shelves below, so that we didn't have to deal with the space.

One time I saw a kitchen with art glass type bowls, vases and platters displayed up there.  There weren't a lot of them, but they were good size pieces.  It had a gallery display look to it (with lighting), and was very pretty.

  • A few pieces of my grandmother's Fiestaware.  I have the newer stuff in the same colors, but can't use hers due to lead in the glaze so I keep some platters (on display stands) and pitchers up there.

  • Nothing - our cabinets go to ceiling.  Inside the top 'cubbies' size cabs with glass I have pottery etc

Nothing. The crown molding at the tops of the cabinets is pretty tall. Anything I put up there would need to be raised up on a platform to be seen, and then it would probably hit the ceiling.

  • Ugh. We just put an offer on a house that has space above the kitchen cabinets. Our old house had this too. I dislike it tremendously, but the rest of the house was awesome so I'm dealing with the cabinets. I'm also at a loss for what to do up there.

Beyond platters, artwork, baskets, vases, found objects, or vases, what else is there?

Maybe we'll just fill it in with some sheetrock and make it disappear...

  • We just have lights.  Eventually I may collect some glass pieces because I think they would look nice with the lights.

  • Embarrassed Ceramic chickens. And a few chicken plates on wrought iron stands.

Nothing.  I don't want to have to climb up there to dust anything.  I like the clean look.  I never walk into the kitchen and think - we need something up there.

  • Right now, I don't have any picture to share over here. But, kitchen cabinet design which you have shared that's classy! I'm going to pin it. Honestly, I like to fit my kitchen cabinets with my ceiling. If I have space so it will fill up by designer plates. What you think about it?

I don't understand why anything has to go there.... I agree with KAC, I've never felt like it needed something. I've seen so many posts about this I'm starting to thing I'm weird for NOT wanting anything there. I would never want to create a focal point there and draw someone's gaze to the top of my cabinets.

  • We only have like half a foot up there.  The previous owners had teacups and saucers, which fit their style.  We have nothing.  When we renovate I'd like to do crown molding to the ceiling.

This. I wish they went to the ceiling but they don't. So, they stay bare. I have had no desire to put something up there, ever.

  • We've got crown molding and then about 10 inches of space before it hits the ceiling.  I put faux grape vines up there to go with our wine themed kitchen.

  • I don't have anything above mine most of the year either. I can't stand the clutter. I also only have like 6 inches above the molding so anything either smacks the ceiling or is invisible.

In the winter I put a lighted cranberry garland. It's pretty, it fits my style and makes winter seem cozier.

  • Nothing so far, but it needs something. I love the first poster's picture. I'm on the fence about decorating about the cabinets. I know some people don't like the clutter and having to dust. However, I think it depends on the kitchen. The way my kitchen is set up makes it almost impossible to decorate it in any way. I have no window to put a curtain on and no wall space for pictures really. The only place I can really add interest and color would be above the cabinest.
  • Nothing.  Our cabinets run to the ceiling.
