Why do dogs eat grass?

This might be a dumb question.. but really, why is my dog eating grass?

She's a 3 year old golden retriever. Up on all of her shots. Extremely healthy. Gets lots of exercise.  Nothing has changed about her diet or habits. Yet in the last 3 weeks she has picked up eating grass and vomiting it by the back door. What's the deal?

Sorry if this is dumb.. I just always thought that dogs that did this weren't up on shots or were unhealthy. And I know my dog is either of these so now I'm at a loss! TIA!

Re: Why do dogs eat grass?

  • My dogs will only eat grass when their stomach is upset.

  • It really doesn't have anything to do with health reasons. Dogs just like the way it tastes.

Same here. Or when they're constipated.

    Jasper usually pukes his up...

    Yup. This.

Though usually Cooper does this & then doesn't puke, but he's weird....

  • Lurker here but my dog eats grass all the time. Not like grazing like a cow but specific blades or clumps here and there.  She sniffs and tastes blades all over the yard but only eats the ones that she wants to.  Like those are the juiciest or the tenderest.

But then again she also likes dandelions, bark and acorns. So my goat girl may not be the best one to use as an example.

Oh, and she never pukes it up.

  • My dog will randomly do this too. It's usually when we're outside playing so I was wondering if it had to do with him being thirsty. Of course there is a bowl of water, but maybe the grass tastes better?

  • IMO there's a difference between a dog selectively eating grass that he seems to find especially appealing and a dog eating grass to induce vomiting over a period of time. I'm generally not quick to go to the vet but if the vomiting occurs more than once or twice over a short period, I might consider a vet trip just to be sure everything is okay. In my experience regular vomiting is not normal so that would be the concern for me.

My dog is the same way and so did my parents dog when he was alive.

  • Jackson will continue to graze like a cow if we get him. Especially in the spring and the shoots are really green. Our running joke is that he's a sheepdog not a sheep lol. He never vomits from it but it does come out the other end. Like kristinanddan said Jackson tends to do it more after playing outside when he's thirsty.

But if they are getting sick from it or seem in distress I would bring it up next time you're at the vet.

Poe: Here we go once again with the "I was a wild stray..." story. Blah blah blah *eye roll*

  • Ditto setsail, my dog grazes like a cow in our backyard, especially if it's really green and lush. He'll eat it on our walks too, if a patch looks tasty.

He also enjoys eating acorns all fall, much to our dismay. Greyhound gas is already noxious, but a grey who's been eating acorns has gas that's 110x worse.
