Moving with a cat

I could really use some help.  I just moved into an apartment this weekend and have finally been able to bring my cat.  I moved her in last night after anything that would cause a commotoin, moving furniture, furniture cleaning, etc. was all done to minimize any chances of her running away.  I am worried she is really stressed out and if her behavior is normal.  She lived with my parents for about 12-13 years, and that is all she has ever known.  She has also gone from being surrounded by a lot of dogs to being a single pet.  I haven't washed my bedding from when it was at my parents' house (over spring break), and we had brought some beds she used from my parents' house as well.  Most of the furniture is the same, but it got cleaned.

I didn't think she was doing too bad.  She was walking around a lot and exploring and was fine sleeping last night.  But this morning when I woke up and was getting ready she decided to use one of her beds as a litter box, instead of her litter box.  It is the same litter box she had at home, and I had shown her where it was multiple times the night before and even a few minutes before she used one of her cat beds instead.

I am just wondering, is this normal?  It would almost make more sense to me if it had been something she wasn't familar with.  I am thinking of keeping her in the room with her litter box and moved her food and water in there for the day.  I just am worried she will go to the bathroom somewhere else again while my fiance and I are gone for the day and we won't be able to clean it up in time or notice it or something.  This isn't the kind of behavior I want to encourage in my cat.  Am I doing the right thing?  Or am I giving cruel and unusual punishment to her?

Re: Moving with a cat

  • We always start my cats in a single room and let them explore more of the house as they get more comfortable.  I would restart her in a single room and get some rescue remedy for her water and either a feliway diffuser or feliway collar to help with the stress.  Also, I'm assuming she has the same litterbox?  A lot of cats prefer their old boxes that smell like them to new ones.
