Are you going to the tournament in york this weekend? Poe and I are coming back for the 1st time since Oct *bites nails*. Hope she doesn't embarrass me too bad.
Jackson: I used to be wild, like the wolf, and now I'm reduced to posing in pink petals for your enjoyment. The joys of domestication
Poe: Here we go once again with the "I was a wild stray..." story. Blah blah blah *eye roll*

Re: *kristinanddan*
No, the team is going to a tournament in NH instead. We're actually not going, and I'm not sure if we'll be going again for a while. The team our captain has Patches on is rather slow, and Patches slows them down even more (he's running around 7 with a pass), so they run over 24 and only get 5 points. He apparently can't have a full-time spot until he runs closer to 6, so I'm a bit upset and protesting.
I'm sure Poe will do great though! We went to a tournament in mid-March (which had to be judged by eye, btw - nothing worked), but he hadn't competed before that since October. It was the first time he could consistently run too. He managed to run every heat both days. We've definitely come a long way, now it's just speed I guess.
But good luck to you guys! If my crazy guy can figure it out after a break, Poe will be just fine!
I'm sorry
We have a few dogs that are slower and we just build teams to help keep the speed up. Have you looked around at other clubs to see what their philosophies are about team building and training? I would be upset too.
I'm happy because I get to run with my friend's corgi who is debuting in her 1st full spot. She's a hoot to watch and it takes the pressure off lol. I really like running with new handlers/dogs because i'm not that competitive and I just want everyone to run safe and have fun.
I hope you have fun and if not, start shopping and find a group that will work with you and help you either get a bit more speed or work with you to find a team that works for everyone. Hopefully we'll end up at a tournament together someday

Thanks for the advice. I may start to think about finding a new team. He loves playing so I don't want to just quit, but at this point I'm torn. The dogs on that team are all fairly slow - it's our not-very-competitive-at-all team - and unfortunately he's also really slow and they end up consistently running 24.3, 24.2.
He's much faster when we practice at home so I'm hoping as his confidence continues to build he'll get faster at competitions too. If not, if they won't find a spot for us to have some fun (because really, at the end of the day does the dog care if he got 25 points or 5?), I'll have to start looking for a new team.
But oh my goodness, corgis are some of my favorite dogs to watch play flyball. SOOO cute! I'm a lot like you in that I really just want my dog to have fun. And there's nothing like a dog at his/her first competition - it's so fun to see what they'll do!
We mix our teams so they all run about the same speed. but I definitely have teams that I feel more relaxed on! Hopefully with time and exposure he'll figure it out and have more fun/speed in a competition just like at practice. I'm not too familiar with clubs up your way but I hope you can find a good fit.
This little corgi girl is a riot! She's super tiny and a little speed racer but kind of nutty lol. I think her and Poe will have loads of fun together on the lane lol. And we are bookended by our older seasoned start dog (who has his 70K!) and our super intense border collie anchor. So party in the middle lol. Poe's not a fan of passing and close passes push the corgi girl off the last jump so hopefully they can have some nice loose passes and have fun. My only fear is that we have a back-up height dog from another team and sometimes changing up the line up freaks Poe out. But she's usually a-ok with height dogs as long as they dont' lane hog or talk smack at the lane.

LOL. That is Patches too - dogs that are really intense are just way too much for him. He'll run super duper wide to get around them at the start - it's kind of funny to see.
We had taught him to pass with a big Golden who wouldn't mind Patches barking at him as they passed. It worked really well, but now he is absolutely terrified to pass big dogs. I feel bad.
That's an interesting idea. We have 3 teams - one that runs right around 17.5-18, one that's 19-20, and one that's like 22+, and we don't really mix them up too much.
We do have a few new dogs though so I wonder if we'll make a 4th team. If we do, maybe it could be a fun team of green dogs for a while and Patches could be their height dog.

Yeah it must be hard to get used to passing if the dog you're passing is always changing. I've only just started being able to actually pass Patches, and so far I'm terrible at it.
I meant to ask before - are you still teaching Jackson to play flyball? How's that going?
Actually I am still teaching Jax. Lets just say disc is his sport and leave it at that lol. He loves to run and gets super excited but he doen't understand what we are doing at all. I think it is a little too independent for him and he just wants to work with me. He had a nice box turn without a ball but if I get more than 10-15 feet from the box he spins around and starts offering me tricks instead lol. I tried training him to go around a cone so I could get more distance but that just led to a bunch of unrelated CMF tricks that ended up with him doing a backwards box turn instead *sigh*. And of course when he gets really ramped up he blows the jumps and just starts in on some slow old man zoomies. He's a hoot lol! At first I thought it would be cool to get his FD at 11 or 12 but now I think I'll just let him have fun at practice running around like a loon lol.
