Housebreaking Regression

My 6 month old weim puppy hasn't had an accident in the house in about 2 months. We're very consistent about letting him out and have established a schedule with him. Yesterday he lifted his leg and peed (first time he'd lifted his leg to pee) in front of his crate. I caught him in the act and stopped him and took him out, but I'm just wondering if this is normal? Has anyone else experienced something like this?

We had him in his crate for about 15 minutes prior to the accident to let my pet rabbit run around for a little bit. Does anyone have any experience with dogs and rabbits together? Is this a contributing factor?

Re: Housebreaking Regression

  • I don't have experience with dogs and rabbits, so I'm no help there, but it is normal for a dog (especially such a young puppy) to have an accident occasionally or regress a bit in housebreaking.  My 4.5 year old recently had 2 accidents in one week after years of zero accidents.  DH and I had just returned from a 10-day vacation, and both happened within the first week we were back.  We crated him for a week and also made sure he got longer and more frequent potty breaks.  He has been accident free for a month now.

Make sure you clean up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle (so your pup can't smell the pee and think it's ok to potty there again), and stick to your schedule.  You might want to take a step back in the training by tethering the puppy to you for a couple days so you can watch him closely.  If he starts having accidents frequently, I would also consider a vet visit to make sure nothing is wrong physically/health-wise.
