In my effort to donate our second (and last) convertible carseat, I discovered that is was manufactured 6 years ago and therefore can't be donated for use by a child.
I just left a message with our local police to see if they can use it for demonstrations or if they know of any group that might be able to make use of it. I also called the local high school tech department to see if they could use it for parts or anything else; they cannot.
Any other suggestions for places to call that might be able to use it in any way, shape, or form? I almost wish my kids had trashed it during use because disposing of a new-looking car seat that wasn't cheap just feels... odd.

Only thing that weirds me out in giving it away is that it could theoretically still get borrowed/taken by someone who thinks "oh! free carseat!" and tries to use it in their car - like a new grandmother or babysitter or someone who doesn't know about the expiration date issue. That's why I always persuade people to throw out old dog crates and cages too (and cover them up so they don't get taken by others). As much as the *could* be used in other ways, they could also be taken and used inappropriately and I wouldn't want to be an enabler of that either.
The fabric can be removed if you loved the pattern - cup holders too.
Lots of recycling centers will take the seat if you put it out with your regular curbside recycling. They usually require that you strip it of all coverings and foam, cut the straps and write "unsafe" all over it so that someone cant scoop it up and try to put their kid in it.
Yeah, this. I had to get rid of our infant seat after I was in an accident with it. I disassembled it completely - took the straps off and threw them in one trash can, threw the cover in a different one, and wrote "DO NOT USE, HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT" on the actual seat and base on different parts in perm. marker. I knew if I just put it in the trash whole someone would have taken it.

Curious about this also -- I've never heard that dog crates shouldn't be re-used. I got two of my three dog crates second-hand, and the shelter I volunteer for is constantly begging for old crates.
