Kitchen thoughts (PIP)

DH and I are meeting with our builder tonight to select our kitchen (cabinets, countertops, back splash, etc). We are having a terrible time deciding on what we want. We went and saw a coworkers house last night and I really liked it, that is until my mom, said she didn't think it went together at all. What do you ladies think? She comment specifically on the color of the countertops vs the cabinets.

Re: Kitchen thoughts (PIP)

  • I love the countertops and cabinets together! I actually think that's a pretty standard look.

I however, despise that backsplash. Mainly because it's NMS but I think it makes the kitchen look soo sooo busy when thrown in the cabinets and counters. It's not bad and I'm sure half the nest loves it, but it's not for me.

I take bigger issue with the floor though. It's too busy with the backsplash (IMO they should've done one or the other) and maybe it's my monitor but the color seems off with the rest of the kitchen.

If you pick a different backsplash and floor, your kitchen will be just fine.

  • I think it all looks fine in general. My only concern is how dark it all is - so it is very space and taste specific in terms of whether your home has lots of natural light or whether you just in general like a dark or light look.

My previous home we had lighter brown cabinets on top and the off white/ivory cabinets on island. With a med.-light tone on granite and a light back splash. I liked it and never felt 'weighed down'. We were in a rental for the past a year while building and the rental kitchen had dark granite, dark cabinets, dark faux wood, and really just made me feel weighed down. When we selected that house to rent I LOVED the dramatic look of the kitchen but as time went on it just depressed me - which is what I mean by taste specific.

If you love the look and you think it is the right look long term for you - go for it.
  • I would personally go with a lighter granite.  And the backsplash is nice, but it'll be out of style in a few years I'm sure.  I'm more of a subway tile person myself.

  • That's a great looking kitchen.  Your mom said that was the one that didn't go?  No offense to your mom, but I'm gonna guess that's her age speaking - the narrow backsplash tiles plus the granite are a newer look that she may not prefer.

Do you have to meet today?  The kitchen is SUCH a big decision that I hate for you to make it if you're not 100% sure.  If you search Pinterest for kitchens and pin all the ones that appeal, you'll quickly learn what looks you prefer.

Agreed. I think it probably is her age and taste.

We have the meeting today to select everything. They did tell us though that if we needed too we could take samples home and sit with them for a few days. So we don't have to make any hard and fast decisions tonight.

I've been all over Pinterest and Google. Found lots of different ideas and I think we know what we don't want. Its the fine details and color options of what we do want that is hard. For example, we like the color of the cabinets in the photo but I can't decide if I want a lighters granite or something of the same tone. And then with the back splash I don't know if going with the glass tile is a good idea or staying more simple with a stone might be better.

Good point on the back splash. I will certainly consider that. Do you mind if I ask why you would go with a lighter granite? I've heard lots of different advice on different colors showing dirty vs not, etc. Thanks!

  • It is a nice look kitchen but NMS at all. It is too monochromatic for me with the brown cabinets, brown tile floors, brown backsplash, and black countertops. I would want something different in that mix to lighten up the dark colors.
  • In my opinion I like the granite and the tile but I don't like them together.

  • I like it but think it's going to look very dated very fast - mainly due to the backsplash and floor, and the room being overwhelmingly brown.  I'd try to go with a more traditional/timeless look.

What color scheme would you suggest for a more traditional/timeless look?

  • I would prefer a lighter granite, and I don't care for the backsplash.  It looks busy to me with the granite next to it.  Maybe if the glass tiles were larger?

  • That seems to be a really "heavy" and dark look. I would prefer lighter cabinets (maybe a maple or bamboo?) and a lighter granite if that's the overall look you're going for.

I was just thinking this.  The kitchen is fine.  The materials are nice.  It's just... uninteresting.
