Re: Santorum suspending his campaign

  • I just got a news alert on my phone that he's dropping out.  Party!!!

ETA.  My cheering seems mean now.  I hope his family is okay.  I just don't want him to be president.

My first thought.  I hope she is improving.

I think they just haven't updated their article yet.
  • I assume it's because of his daughter's poor health.  Good for him for having his priorities in the right place.  Although, I suspect he was more interested in preaching the gospel than actually becoming president.
  • I heard on the news that his daughter has Trisomy 18.  I have always been told that Tri 18 isn't compatible with life.  Anyone have anymore information about her?

    I hope she's doing okay.

(But I would be lying if I didn't say I was relieved at the thought of him being out of the race)

ETA: I just read more. 90% die within the first year of life, and the oldest surviving child with this diagnosis is 13.  So awful.

Is his daughter in critical condition?

While I am absolutely not questioning his love for his daughter, the cynic in me has to wonder if he and his team also saw this as an opportunity for him to bow out without looking like a loser.

I have a question/thought about this.  I fully agree that his priority should be his family.  But in less than 4 months he's had to take breaks from the campaign trail twice b/c of his daughter's poor health.  Is that really a good idea if you're President?  You can't really just take breaks from that. It's a very double edged sword IMO.

  • I have to say, this is the first time I have had any respect for the man. Good for him for putting the needs of his family before his own ambition.

And thank goodness that there's no chance he can become President now.

So he's out for real?  That's kind of too bad.  I was really enjoying the show.  But I do agree that he at least has his priorities in place, particularly since he was never going to win anyway.

You'll get no argument from me.  If it's a fair question for every single woman who's ever run for (vice) President, then it's certainly a fair question for a man who's had to take 2 breaks in a short time to tend to his family.  Andplusalso, I will not argue against anything that makes anyone think twice about voting for that ass-holio.

That was exactly my thought, especially since she's terminal, but I was afraid it would be callous to express.  I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Oh, don't you worry, there was no way in hades I would vote for him, even if he was a complete orphan with no friends or family to tend to.

People have survived into their 30's and 40's with Trisomy 18, though often with severe disabilities and unable to care for themselves.  I remember reading an article about a 30-ish year old woman who had it and also had normal intelligence.  I believe it was only found because she was having difficulty conceiving.

But I'm pissed that they interrupted Anderson for this news nugget.

+1.  I mean, I'm THRILLED Mittens is the nom, thrilled for the real campaigning to start, etc. But man, I feel for the guy.

I bet this isn't the first time Santorum's been a buzz kill.

  • While I sincerely wish him the absolute best with regards to his family, his daughter, and her health, I am incredibly relieved that he will no longer be a serious candidate for President.

Canada just took a giant sigh of relief.

    FALSE

And shame on you for lying about such a serious thing. She did not have trisomy 18, she had trisomy 18 mosaicism. That means she had some trisomy 18 cells. And not a large part of her, either.

A healthy 30-year-old woman was discovered unexpectedly to have trisomy 18/ normal chromosome mosaicism. She was ascertained because of a history of three spontaneous abortions following the birth of a healthy son. Trisomy 18 was present in 18% of her lymphocytes and 2% of her cultured skin fibroblasts. She had several minor malformations associated with trisomy 18 syndrome. She is, to our knowledge, the first person who has clinical stigmata of trisomy 18 but has normal intelligence and leads a normal family life.

Whoa.  Easy there.  I think attempting to shame me and calling me a liar is a bit unfair.  I read the article quite awhile ago, and I sincerely apologize for not recalling it correctly.  And I am painfully aware of the serious nature of Trisomy 18.

Dude, slow your roll. Maybe she didn't know that trisomy 18 and trisomy 18 mosaicism were two different things. I know I wouldn't.
