Anyone have a stone house & siding? (with link to pic)

I figure this is probably the best place to ask..

DH and I have a stone home and the 2nd floor is siding. Right now its a hideous green color and we want to paint it a beige/tan color. Just curious if anyone might have pictures of that they can share. We're need to pick a color by the end of next week. This is so much harder than the inside because I feel like the inside can always be changed but we're hiring someone to paint outside so its pretty much one and done.

At the very least does anyone have recommendations for a beige exterior color?

  • I don't know what color your stone is, but my house has a grayish stone with some purplish tones in them. Here's a pic I pulled off of my FB page (it was a pic of the flowers) but you can see the stonework in the back and along the porch wall:

I would have gone an even darker shade of gray, but it's hard to visualize until it's up. Have you considered a gray shade with your stone?

  • Our stone is a greyish tone. I'll have to see if I have pics online anywhere bc I don't have FB. I did not consider grey but I like it. I'm starting to think though I should go darker than what I picture in my head just to be on the safe side of it not all blending together.

  • Hopefully this link works. Since this pic was taken we've completely removed all the walls to the front porch and its an open porch. On top of the stone pillars are white wood columns. So now the entire first floor is all exposed stone. I just don't have a picture of it with me at work.

great house!! I bet it looks really good with the porch opened up! Anyway, your stone looks more beige-y than mine so I think it would still look good if you chose a tan/beige paint. I'm terrible with colors though. Honestly, the best way to see which color looks best is to buy samples of different colors and paint large swatches onto your siding (not sure if you could do that yourself though). Or you could try painting large pieces of plywood or even posterboard and hold it up against your stonework and see which complements it best.  Or have you tried driving around your neighborhood to see if there are any colors that catch your eye?

Sorry, I wish I could be more helpful!

I looked at your house pic again and it looks like you might be able to climb out of that second story window and stand on the porch roof to paint the siding. Is that safe? If it is, I'd definitely paint some swatches on your siding before committing to a color. Professional exterior painting is not cheap! I'd be so annoyed if I hated the color I ended up choosing after paying someone to paint.

    good luck!!

  • Thanks! It looks a million times different without the porch closed in. Neighbors came out of the wood work to stop by when we were taking down the walls to say how happy they were that we were opening it!

I think if we stood on the car port we could paint some samples. Or even stand on the roof of the porch. I think maybe we'll just do that this weekend so we have a week to think about it. Funny you mention driving around the neighborhood...we're constantly scoping out the other houses but they are all so different its hard to find exactly what we're looking for!

  • I think I would go with white scallop siding and maybe put up some blue shutters?
