Opinions needed - Salon services at beauty school

DH and I are cutting back expenses as I prepare to start attending school basically full-time this fall. I'm considering checking out a local hair academy for a haircut and brow wax, as I have a hard time justifying $130 every 6-8 weeks.

FWIW, my hair is pretty simple, a few inches longer than shoulder length, some long layers. Does anyone have any experience with getting haircuts/salon services at a beauty school?

I think my hair is probably long enough that even if they screw it up a little, I can always get it fixed elsewhere.

Re: Opinions needed - Salon services at beauty school

  • Last year I went to the Atlanta Paul Mitchell school and the girl did a great job. I got blonde highlights (foils) and side swept bangs, she even curled it for me and the curls lasted through the next day too. I would be willing to go again.
  • I did that all thru grad school and still do it every now and then. My BFF she is frugal and she scouts free services all the time, like she goes to Toni & Guy on education nights and becomes their model, or looks on Craigslist to find someone looking for a model for hair cut and color.  I have a coworker who goes to Aveda Inst. for all her salon services and is very happy withe the result.

The services at beauty school are fine, the appointment may take a little longer than usual and in my area is hard to get an appointment, they book up very quick.

  • Thanks for the input! I scheduled a haircut and brow wax for tomorrow afternoon. We'll see how it goes. If I like the results, I may try out other services (mainly hair color) in the future.
  • I would feel better doing this if it was a specialty school (PM, Aveda) and not a local beauty school that has newbies.  I've gotten too many bad cuts to go down this road. Sorry!

  • I went to the Paul Mitchell school for years for highlights. They even did my updo for my wedding. I never had a bad experience there. The services take longer to complete but I brought a book and enjoyed myself.
