Exterior lighting - suggestions?

We have an electrician at the house today, doing the wiring for ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and the whole house fan.  As sort of a last minute decision, we're also having him put in a box on the back of the house to provide some light on the deck (so we can see the grill).  It'll be on one side or the other of the slider that goes out onto the deck.

Here's the back of the house:

Currently the measly bulb on the left side of the family room french doors is the sum total of lighting on the back of the house:

I'm going to need to make a decision pretty quickly.

What kind of fixture would you use?

Re: Exterior lighting - suggestions?

  • I would do a standard exterior fixture next ot the door.

I would be tempted to also wire for a box at the end, past the french doors for a floodlight.  We have one outside of our back garage door and it's great for when we take the dog out.

  • Yeah, we actually started out asking about wiring for floodlights on the corners of the 2nd story, just kind of washing over the backyard.  There was some reason the electrician didn't think it was a good idea.  Calvin was there for the estimate, and I was working insane hours last week so I just took it at face value that for whatever reason it wasn't a good plan.

Instead the electrician suggested that we replace the ineffectual existing light with a directional light fixture that would better light the backyard.  I can get on board with that.  The extra fixture on the deck is mostly so I can stop carrying a light outside to see if my burger's done on the grill yet.

  • Do you have to pick it out today for him to install it?  Or can you just have him install a box today and put a cover over it so you can have some time to pick something you like?

I'm partial to Rejuvenation myself.  My SIL just got one similar to this to illuminate the grilling area.

Also, if you are ever thinking about hanging exterior Christmas lights I'd suggest having the electrician add an exterior outlet in the ceiling/soffit of your porch so you don't have to run an extension cord down to the outlet.
