Dry skin and losing hair?

I've noticed that Dapper has really dry skin and is losing a little hair on his chest. There is also a little redness where there is a little hair loss. Any ideas of how I can help him be less itchy and help his dry skin?

Re: Dry skin and losing hair?

  • What are you feeding him?  In addition to a high quality food (I would go for grain-free), maybe try adding some salmon oil, which promotes healthy skin and coat.  When we adopted S, he had bald patches that were just starting to grow in and lots of red, itchy, inflamed skin.  We switched him to Wellness Core with a salmon oil supplement (he was on Purina and SD before we adopted him0, and the results were amazing.

  • I feed Chicken Soup. He was on Pedigree before we brought him home.

Is Chicken Soup grain-free?  If not, I would switch to a grain-free option and perhaps a fish-based one (TOTW Pacific Stream, Wellness Core Ocean, etc.) or some other novel protein.  He might be having a reaction to the grains and/or the protein.  Also, how long has he been on the Chicken Soup?  We started seeing results pretty fast when we switched Skippy to Core, but it definitely took some time for all redness to go away and for his coat to come in fully.

  • No, it's not grain free. My issue is I don't know if he had itchy problems before we brought him home and switched him. He's been on it for over a month. I also would like to keep all 3 dogs on the same food.
