We just bought a new home. It was built in 1993, and the foyer is two story so it has one of those staircases with all the railings and spindles. Back in that time the building code wasn't as stringent as it is today with spacing of spindles, so on this staircase, the spindles are probably 6 inches apart. Building codes these days say they must be less than 4 inches apart.
The issue is that we have two kids under two. AND I'm not going to leave the old spindles the way they are for obvious reasons.
My question: Can exterior spindles you'd use for decking be used on interior staircases? The current spindles are wooden and white and I want to go to a bronze metal.
Re: Staircase Spindles Interchangable??
I'm pretty sure they can.
We have iron spindles on our staircase with the option to match them outside.
I don't think they had special interior/exterior ones. Just generic metal spindles.

Another factor you need to consider is versatility. Although iron and wood balusters may be used inside and outdoors, wooden balusters tend to be better used inside. This is just because wood includes a much shorter life time whether it uncovered to harsh outside climate conditions for example rain, snow, hot sun, etc. An iron baluster is more powerful and is able to withstand harsh climate conditions. However, to be able to ensure that it stays in good shape, you should keep up with the iron baluster having a regular fresh paint job to be able to ensure that it stays from rusting.
