XP: Has anyone ever replaced their furnace or a/c?
Our a/c is dead, so that's a gimmie. Our furnace is 18 years old and
the secondary heat exchanger has cracks in it (hello carbon monoxide
poisoning risk).
We've had 3 of 4 companies come and give us a
quote. They're all about in the same ballpark, so it's really coming
down to the choice of brand and/or company.
The brands we've been quoted on are:
Carrier - Infinity and Performance series
AirEase
Amana - Distinctions series
Ruud
We have one more company coming tonight and they look to be a Lennox dealer.
Anyone have any opinions on those 5?
Re: XP: Has anyone ever replaced their furnace or a/c?
Also, in case we have any HVAC specialists here, some more info:
The current a/c is a 3 ton, 10 SEER unit. We had one contractor suggest going to a 2.5 ton unit, but when we asked two other contractors about that they said it was a bad idea. Most are recommending a 3 ton, 13 SEER unit as the ROI of going to a 15 or 16 SEER is something like 5 or 6 years assuming 600 cooling hours per year (and we never reach 600 cooling hours per year).
The current furnace is 80,000 BTU. One contractor did some calculation based on the gas we actually used in the coldest month in the last three years (pulled from our actual energy bill) to see if it was sized correctly. I can't remember the actual number he said our furnace used, discounting other gas appliances in the house - I think it was something around 48,000 or 49,000. But he definitely said a 70,000 BTU unit would more than suffice.
We're in SE WI. So we use the furnace 75% of the year. We rarely use the a/c - our house is normally set to 80? in the summer. We're close to the lake, so we stay cooler than other parts of the state. So we're looking to put more money into the furnace than the a/c.
House is two story, 2000 sq. ft. not including finished basement (adds another 500 sq. ft). We don't have much issue with temperature differential between the floors.

We had a new AC and (oil burning) furnace installed a few years ago. We paid $5500 for both, and they also got rid of our old units, put a new disconnect outside by the AC, and re-ran our oil line from the tank.
Both of our units are Carrier and we have had absolutely no issues.
We got a new Lennox AC 2 years ago. It's been FANTASTIC. Absolutely no complaints.
Our furnace is fine for a while yet so I don't know anything about that.
