Anyone have a No Solictors sign?

I hate that it's come to this, but I'd like to put one up.  We are getting at least one a day, sometimes several and being home alone all day with 2 little kids I just don't feel comfortable about it. It's also annoying to have the door bell ringing and pounding on the door when I'm trying to put DS down for a precious nap.

If at all possible, I'd like the sign to exclude girl scouts Smile

A random guy from Detroit Michigan asking for money for educational programs and nothing to show for it sponsored this post.

Is this weird if done in a fun way?  Any suggestions?

Re: Anyone have a No Solictors sign?

  • I have one I found on Etsy that says "No Solictors, Children Welcome". We have a lot of kids in our neighborhood and I don't mind buying from them every once in a while. Here is the shop:

  • I have two, just in case they miss the first.  I printed them myself because I'm a cheap-ass, but ebay and etsy have cute ones, some of while exclude girl scouts.

  • Kids welcome is perfect!  Kids are pretty much the only exception.

  • I got fed up one day and took my handy dandy label maker and made one to stick to my door. I got so tired of the dogs barking and waking up the kids! I do like the etsy idea though.

  • I had a piece of paper that said "Do Not Disturb" up for a while and it worked great.

I want to get something more permanent.

I have a big window in the middle of my front door so people can TOTALLY tell when I'm home... and I still don't open it. I'm paranoid. I keep my walking stick with my pepper spray right next to the front door, too. And we live in a totally safe area.

  • I got one at Rejuvenation and have it on the gate.  I'm surprised at how many people still come up and knock on the door!

Apparently it come in silver tone too. :)

  • It might help some but I wouldn't expect it to be full proof. My mom has not one but two Beware of Dog signs because she has a protective terrier mix. One day a guy trying to sell something game in the gate before I could get out the door to stop him and the dog nipped at him. He looked at me and said that dog just bite me, I told him it says right on both of those signs the dog will bite you! Stupid people.
  • We have 4, thats right FOUR! at work, they don't do squat. I have watched a solicitor look at the sign, try to open the door (which is locked), bang on the glass, then ring the bell.

When you go to the door and ask if you can help them they start their speech and then you point out the sign and they say "Oh I'm sorry I'll be just a minute" at that point I have the right to tell them I'm calling the cops and close the door.

    They scurry away after that.

  • We do....I have a feeling kids dont know what soliciting is, because while it keeps away the collage painters, the nieghboorhod soccer team and the neighbor kids doing fundraisers all come anyways! So personally I wouldnt worry about trying to make sure kids know they are welcome, I think a lot would try anyways (unless your a mean grump to them the first time..then they might not come back). Plus even if they didnt come, I can get girlguide cookies when the sell them in front of the supermarket, I dont really NEED them to know they are welcome to ask me for money when I am at home.
  • I printed one off our city's website. There is a no solicitor law in effect. Solicitors are supposed to be registered with the city and they cannot come to your house if you have a sign posted. Religious groups are exempt though. It's been working so far! What a life/sanity saver.

  • I have two small children at home too and live in a development where we get a lot of solicitors, especially in the warmer months. I had my husband disable our doorbell, so it no longer wakes my kids up during naps. If solicitors are out there, I don't notice them, I haven't had a problem since!
