How fast do you run on a treadmill?

it's raining here for the next couple days so I ran on my treadmill. My speed was between 5-6 is that good? Also I think my distance count on my machine is broke. It said I only went 3.7 miles and I ran for 45 mins. Is that right?

Re: How fast do you run on a treadmill?

  • I'm assuming the 5-6 is miles per hour... That's between 10 and 12 minutes miles. Is that about what you normally run?

5 mph * .75 hours = 3.75 miles. So it's close if you were at 5 mph the whole time.

  • 9mm on the tm is around 6.6/6.7 on the "speed" reader. Your macine sounds correct.

  • I have noticed a huge difference in my running style and speed when I run on a treadmill.  I feel like I am running faster on a treadmill but actually I'm running slower.  So I wouldn't be surprised if it was right.

It's the treadmill. I always run slower on the treadmill. I think it's the shorter stride, running in place type of thing. An average training run for me would be in the upper 8's, but on a treadmill I feel like I'm going way too fast at a 7.

I'm the exact same way. Maybe it has to do with running in place, but I always feel like I am being so speedy and then I realize, I am not going even my usual speed.

  • Thanks everyone :) Thank god it hardly rains around here so I don't have to run on it that often and now I know when I do I need to be at least at a 7. thanks again!
  • I never go by the time or distance on the treadmill. Ever since I started using my foot pod with my Garmin, 6.0 on the treadmill is really a 9:15 pace for me since I wear the foot pod calibrated to my stride. 3.68 miles on the treadmill is really 4 miles for me.

I wouldn't go by the treadmill display at all. That's calibrated to the belt.

  • I do my running portions of C25K at 4 mph on my treadmill & found I actually run over 5 mph when I used a GPS app during my first 5k last weekend.

Can you explain this to me like I'm 5? I can't wrap my head around this. How could you ever go faster (and therefore further) than the belt?

  • Wow, I'm really surprised to read this thread!  I only ever run on a treadmill really, but I would expect the opposite result because you have to propel yourself on the road.  That will make me feel less discouraged next time I run outside :)
  • I run at 5.7 mph on the treadmill

Rather than type this all out again, here's a blog post I wrote on the subject a couple of months ago. Let me know if this makes sense! :)

I still don't get it. If the belt on the treadmill is 10 feet long and it makes 80 rotations you have gone 800 feet (or whatever). How could you go further in the same period?

  • I usually run between 6-7mph on the treadmill.

  • I guess I'm an odd one since I run faster on the treadmill.  For me i think it's because my outside runs are hilly and I don't have anything to force me at a pace like the treadmill does.

I've noticed that I run faster outside than my treadmill says I do inside, or that my outdoor pace is a little more difficult when I'm on the treadmill, but yea... I still don't get this concept or how you could possibly be running ahead of your treadmill.

  • My settings are always 6.1 mph on a 1.0 incline for 3 miles.  I should probably adjust to challenge myself more but that's just my routine
