I'm trying to figure out what makes the most sense with regard to balancing my calories burned during workout vs. calories consumed. What would you do?
Here's some background: I work out at 7pm each night. Morning classes aren't an option for me. The calories burned during that time vary because it's a bootcamp class so the workout is never the same. (I have a bodybugg, so I know for sure there's a pretty good variance in burn.)
Does it make sense to start my "day" in MFP in the evening instead of the morning? I'd start with my pre-workout snack so that my workout calories are entered and I know how many calories I can eat going forward from there?
Would that be too confusing in the journal since it automatically moves to the next day or would it be okay since I can rename my meals?
The problem I'm running into with starting my food journal with breakfast is that I don't really know how many calories I'm going to burn at bootcamp in the evening. I don't want to over eat, and at the same time I don't want to under eat as I have been because then I have a lot of calories to make up for after the workout which is really too late to be eating a ton. (8pm or later)
I'm open to other ideas as well, because I'm probably making this harder than it needs to be. ![]()
Re: starting calorie count at night?
I've heard of doing that, but don't have any experience. I usually just plan my eating for the next day and average out may calories burned vs calories consumed during the week. Unless you're really fine tuning or having an issue losing, I don't think you need to be so precise as to get an exact intake and burn for each 24 hour period.
could you track your calories by hand rather than using an online program so you could start in the evening? I personally would find it confusing to start at night using an online program that switches at midnight. I would still use the program to get an idea of the nutritional value for foods but I would track by hand to keep myself accountable.
Also, could you average your workouts for the last month or so and base your calories burned off of that? yes, some days you may be under because you burned more at boot camp and some days you may be over but in the end it would help keep your body confused.
Just look at your weekly average - you don't have to be precise every single day because there are going to be some days that you don't eat all your calories and some days you eat over, especially if you have built in cheat meals.
In the MFP app, just look on the weekly tab and see how your average looks.
Also, my BodyMedia Fit band doesn't like it when I wear it on my arm during bootcamp, it underestimates when I do that, so I wear mine on my calf and get a much more accurate burn.

I hear ya. We've put our bodies through a whole heck of a lot in the past few years. How have you been doing, aside from the weight loss goals? I haven't been on SAIF for a while. You were doing Atkins for a while, right?
Hi!!!
Life is good! Living the dream. lol! How are you? I've grown away from SaIF a bit as well. I'm working to lose the weight I put on last year with the surrogacy attempt. It's crazy that it just won't come off. You're correct. I was doing basically Atkins. Keeping carb very low and eating a lot of fat and protein. I've cleaned that up and still keep carbs low but I'm eating leaner meats, less cheese, and more eggs and veggies. I do well with a low carb/south beach diet. It's just finding a good balance of running, bootcamp, and eating I guess.
