TOTW...question about switching
As I said in a post from yesterday, Dapper is having some itchy issues and I'm not sure if it's from his food (Chicken Soup) which has grains. After reading advice from my post, I am thinking about changing to TOTW. Luckily a store right down the street from me sells it so it will be easy to find. I remember someone saying something about switching between the different proteins to change it up but I don't remember what all was said. Can you do that? Is there one that's better for an itchy dog? If I do switch Dapper, I'll switch the other two too. Thanks!
Oh yea, and are there any TOTW coupons anywhere?
Re: TOTW...question about switching
You can definitely switch proteins - I rotate between the 3 Wellness Core varieties (two are chicken/turkey based and one is fish-based). Luckily, both of my guys do well on all of the Core varieties. We go through a 26-lb. bag every 3 months, so I just switch flavors with each bag. I do a gradual switch (mixing the old food with the new) just to be safe, but I could do a hard switch no problem because it's the same brand of food.
That being said, I stand by my rec in your other post - for an itchy dog that potentially has allergies, I would start with a fish-based food or other novel protein (i.e. not chicken) since it's less likely he'll be allergic to fish than to chicken. TOTW Pacific Stream might work well. You can always see how he does on it, and then if you want to try another protein, TOTW has a lamb formula. For my itchy guy, I started with a fish-based food, and when he flourished on that, I tried the chicken/turkey-based food and found he was fine (I think his issue is just grains and/or crappy fillers), so that might be the case with Dapper also.
If I were feeding my dog all dry (he's on all raw with half a cup of dry a day) then I would be giving giving him the fish (good for dry itchy skin) for one meal and rotate out the bison and lamb for the other meal. That way it gives them a variety of protein. If your dog doesn't have bird allergies, the duck would be good to rotate too. My dog is allergic so I can't feed him any type of bird even though he loves it.
My cousin and I have done a lot of shopping for TOTW and this is the cheapest we've found. http://www.mrchewy.com/s/dog?query=taste%20of%20the%20wild
It's free shipping if you spend $50 and 15% off auto renew which makes a 30lb bag of TOTW only $40 each. I just cancel the auto renew each time cuz I don't want to get a random shipment of unneeded dog food lol.
We feed TOTW but only Sierra Mountain (Lamb). We used to rotate in Pacific Streams, but our bulldog is not a fan of salmon. We tried to rotate in other proteins but the gas from the High Prairie (Bison/Venison) and Wetland (Roasted Fowl) was killer.
As for coupons, they don't have them but I have read that they are very good with giving samples. We get it at a local pet store since their prices are the same as online.
