Has your pest problem improved?
DH was at the neighbors' house this week and said their window trim looks like yours. Their house is younger than ours and was gutted by a fire in 1960ish, so I think all the trim was re-done at some point. Pehaps that was a fad replacment at some point?
Re: Jennylove
Yes!! The ants only lasted a couple of days, ladybugs were gone once it warmed up, and we *think* the cockroaches are coming in from outside because after we applied that treatment we have found dead ones outside Along the perimeter. Now we need to find the holes and stuff them w steel wool.
Interesting about the window trim. I'm going to try curtains first as soon as we can afford 8 panels...ugh.
I also scratched some paint off the baseboards in our main floor bath and the wood was never stained. It's a weird blond color. The rest of the house is stained a walnut color.
Where is a good place to buy new storms? Ours are aluminum and in bad shape. I'd like to open windows without risking more bug infestation. How much do they generally cost?

Great, I'm glad you can leave your bedroom now, haha. Have you tried IKEA for curtains? The selection is sort of limited, but we happened to find some we loved there for pretty cheap.
My books say that bathrooms (and kitchens) were often painted, even originally, because white was considered more sanitary. Or maybe it was remodeled at some point.
Here's a post with everything I know about storms. We DIY'd ours, so I don't have any experience or first-hand recs with commercial storms. One This Old House article I read said they spent $250/window for some swanky ones; the ones in the article I linked in the other post are quoted as $160/window. You might also look into interior storms that can be removed during summer combined with screens on the outside. We didn't caulk our exterior wood storms in, so we just take them down and replace with screens on the same hardware in the spring.
Oh, and if the holes are exposed to the outside, use a copper dish scrubber; steel wool will rust.
Sounds like I've got to do some storm research
Thanks for the tip I never would have known that!

Used the borax recipe you gave us
. I really don't want an exterminator w the kids and pets. ESP now that we think the roaches are coming in from outside.
