Thursday morning whine -Daisy, get in here

Not being able to run is annoying me. I'm supposed to wait another week because of what the orthopedist said (but really, since he didn't even see anything, how can I trust him?), but now even my OBGYN said I shouldn't run until we see a heartbeat and make sure things are going well (she did explain that exercising/running DOES NOT cause miscarriages, she's just afraid that if I do work out hardcore the next few weeks and if I miscarry that I won't be able to forgive myself, etc.)

I've used every kind of elliptical my gym has to offer and I'm sick of them. What else can I do? I used to take spin classes all the time, but since my OBGYN said not to do anything too strenuous and I'm very competitive when it comes to spin, that's out. (I tried it this past weekend and ended up leaving my favorite teacher's class early because I was so aggravated that I couldn't fully participate.)

Swimming is not an option (no access to a pool.) I think I'm going to start walking my 5 mile run loop on the days I had runs scheduled. It's going to be nice out today and I want to be out there.

Whine over. Yes, I know I should probably go eat some cheese, but I already feel so mushy and gross already, cheese would just make that worse.

Re: Thursday morning whine -Daisy, get in here

  • I missed your pg announcement - congrats!

    when is your ultrasound?

maybe try a prenatal yoga class?  What about if you did 10 minutes on the elliptical, 10 minutes on the bike and alternated like that?  Your muscles would really feel it and it might help break up the boredom

  • I had no idea you were pregnant!  Congratulations!!!!!!!  That is amazing news.

I am kind of surprised that your doctor doesn't want you running at all.  I totally know what you are going through though!  Hang in there.  I hope once you see your doctor you get the all clear and can start running again.

Can you lift weights?  or is that out until you see your OBGYN?

  • I was on full bed rest with my first and modified with my second, from about 24w on. It is frustrating! Hopefully you will be cleared soon. Until then, try to enjoy the time off. A long walk sounds nice.

  • Thanks, ladies! I didn't really make a big announcement here - I'm still nervous after last month's loss. I got my BFP last Friday morning and had my 3rd beta draw this morning (I'm seeing a RE for fertility issues, though we did get pregnant spontaneously.) I had a chemical pregnancy last month, so my doctors, husband, mother, etc. are all pleading with me to just relax but I'm an active person (like all of you!) and it's killing me that I can't get out and run, especially with the nice weather we're having (sunny, mid 50s-60s.)

Kat - I tried something similar yesterday - switching up all the different types of ellipticals (all the bikes were taken, but I will probably try that tomorrow.) My leg muscles definitely felt it, but honestly . . . nothing gets my buddha belly toned like running and not being able to run + trying to keep my HR in check + being slightly bloated from finding out that I'm pregnant + some constipation issues (sorry, TMI!) has me looking like I'm already 3 months pregnant, when I'm only 4 1/2 weeks.

My OBGYN is confident that since I am so active that she's going to say yes, I can continue to be, she just doesn't want me to have any regrets, God forbid I should suffer another loss, etc., which I understand and appreciate. (However, she did tell me that I will not be allowed to train for races/increase my mileage more than what I'm used to, so I'll be stuck at 5/6 miles and under and all my race fees will be lost, but obviously, it'll be worth it. We've been trying to get pregnant for a long time, so I'm willing to eat those deposits.)

  • I have been lifting. Just making sure to keep my HR in check, doing the talk test (well, singing test . . . my fellow gym-goers love me), and not getting too overheated. I'm taking a rest day from lifting, since I've done a couple of days in a row now and will just power walk today (I feel like a 70 year old mall-walker saying that.) I'm hoping the walk will get other things in my body moving, ha.

  • hot yoga.

it will help your knee recover (the looser you are, the less injured you will be) and you will get all sweaty like you do during a good run. plus, its challenging and yet peaceful at the same time.

    have fun!

yeah you will have to find a hot yoga studio. there are tons, and they usually offer 2 weeks of unlimited classes (or a similar deal) for new people.

i didnt want to like it since its expensive, but i cant help it...and it has made me run faster.  you should try it!!  it cant hurt.

I was told NOT to do hot yoga by my OBGYN. Prenatal yoga is actually my hardest workout of the week and I went into it feeling like it was going to be incredibly boring! Don't knock it until you try it!

noooo...I would not recommend doing hot yoga. My RE told me to avoid that at all costs during the first tri (especially if you have gone through or are going through treatments).

  • I think gumi might have missed the being PG part of the post.

AG - if you can't get on a bike, try mixing it up with 10 minutes elliptical, 10 minutes resistance work with your arms, 10 minutes elliptical, 10 minutes arm work.

MrsRedRox has lots of workouts in her blog that are of the HIIT variety that you could modify for yourself to be a lower intensity, but still to feel good like you're getting in a workout.

Also, take it outside.  I can't remember where you're at right now but it's starting to warm up everywhere so take advantage of the nice weather while you can.  I was in my 3rd trimester here in Houston with both girls so I can tell you first hand summer + pg = no good!

  • Andbutalso, not telling you to disregard your OB/RE's advice and such, but I lost twins at 10 weeks and then went on to have two successful pregnancies and finding that balance between being yourself and being crazy paranoid is really, really, REALLY hard.  Try yoga for the meditative purposes of it, not for the workout.  When you get pregnant, it's normal to be super nervous and more so when you've had a loss and/or it's taken you a really long time to get knocked up.  So use this time to help develop your mental peace and clarity because (for me at least) the fear never really went away until birth (and then it's a whole new set of fears!) but having some meditative tricks and practices is helpful the entire pregnancy.
  • Thanks, ladies.

Kat, it is especially hard to be calm since we've been trying to get pregnant for a long time, had trouble, had a loss, and now this (although we're both proud of ourselves that both our pregnancies were spontaneous and not medically aided. Especially my DH.) I'm on pins and needles ALL.THE.TIME. The only thing that relaxes me is getting in a workout. I've found some blogs that have some really good workouts and I've been using those to break up the boringness that is the elliptical. It's also hard because right now, I'm on spring break, so there's no work to preoccupy me. I go to the gym, run errands, and then I'm just hanging out, thinking about being pregnant, second guessing every twinge I feel, etc. Next week, when I'm back on schedule and teaching followed by my many tutoring jobs, I'll be so busy that I know I'll relax . . . a little, at least.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies! Unfortunately, when I start back at work next week, I'll be working during all the yoga times my gym offers, but I think my schedule will bring me some peace of mind.
