Another poll: Square or rectangular tiles?

We are considering 18x18 and 12x24 tiles.  I briefly considered 24x24 but they seem too big.  Not sure if there's a thing as too big.

I am favoring 12x24 since I mostly see square tiles.  Which one do you prefer for floors:  square or rectangular?  This is for kitchen and bathroom floors.

Re: Another poll: Square or rectangular tiles?

  • How big is the bathroom?  18x18 and 12x24 both sound pretty big for smaller bathrooms.  We just picked out 13x13 squares for ours, which I wrestled with (are they too big?).  They're going in a 20 sf bathroom, though, which may be smaller than average.

Are the 18x18 and 12x24 different sizes of the same tile product, or different products?  Especially if they're the same tile product you could use one in one room and the other in the other room.

I think you need to pick a smaller tile for the bathroom.  The master bath in our last house is absurdly large at 16'x10' and I put in 12"x12" and it looks perfectly appropriate.

  • The bathroom is 6'x8' so it's not that big.

So, there's such a thing as too big?  I thought the bigger, the better.  I've read that bigger tiles make the room feel bigger. This is why I'm not considering any 12x12 or 13x13.  Is what I've read wrong?

  • I forgot to answer your other question, the 18x18 and 12x24 are the same tile.

    Good to know.

My question about size, if that's what you were answering, was rhetorical.  As in, something we discussed in the decision process.  The tile is ordered.

Ha, no, I was agreeing with you, not commenting on whatever you said :)

In a bath that size, you'll only have a few full tiles laid down if you go with the big size, which I think would look strange. What you've read is true for small tiles with contrasting grout in large spaces.  For neutral tiles with neutral grout, I think a standard 12x12 would be a good consideration for your bath.  You can still do the bigger tiles in your kitchen if it's larger.

  • Of those two choices, I'd go with the 18x18.

I don't think there's such a thing as too big when it comes to tile, especially square tile.

I live in Florida where most houses have a lot of tile on the floors.  Smaller tiles immediately date a house.  I can't imagine putting, say, 12x12 tiles in the main parts of the house.  Our whole downstairs is tiled in 20x20 tiles.  Our master bath and our (pretty small) hall bath have 18x18.

Personal preference, of course, but I don't care for rectangular tiles except for two situations.  Subway tile in bathrooms and a varying size rectangular tiles in a pattern like this.
