Any Boston Ladies Here?

We are planning a weekend getaway to Boston with some of my cousins and are looking for some tips for the area.  Most of all is it best to stay in the heart of the city and will we need a rental car?  We plan to go to a game at Fenway and basically just explore the area as none of us have been.  Any "must do's" would be helpful too!  I'm going to also post on the travel board but wanted to see if any of you could help me out too.

  • I am from Boston. You should not need a rental car if you plan to stay in the city. Everything is close enough to a T stop (train) that you shouldn't need one. All depends on what you like. If you are into museums, the museum of fine art is nice or museum of science (I enjoy that because I am a nerd). If you want more outdoorsy things, take a duck tour through the city. They give up history and you get to see all the "cites". We have a good Aquarium. There is always shows in town as well. The swan boats are nice and a walk through the common are nice. Obviously a sporting event is always fun if you like that kind of thing. Sam Adams Brewery if you like beer. Big Smile

If you want to leave the city for a little adventure, Salem is always fun. Psychics, Ghost tours, history. All depends on what you are into I guess.

  • If you want some good italian food, check out the North End.  Best pastries IMO are hands-down at Mike's Pastry (the BEST cannolis and red velvet cupcakes).

I always forget people dont know about the North End. Yes the North End has the best italian restaurants. There will forever be a fight over whether Mike's Pastry or Modern Pastry is the best. Try both!

  • It looks as if there arent any deals for hotels in the downtown area.  The closest one is in Quincy.  I checked and they said the redline is 3/4mi from the hotel.  Would this be a huge PIA to get to and from the city every day?  Staying in a Marriot with their deal saves hundreds of $$ but I'm just wondering how worth it is it...

What part of Quincy? It is a little bit of a pain but not something you cant do. We have an assistant who comes to work from Quincy every day on the red line.

This is the address but I have no clue where it is exactly.  They did say it was 3/4 mi from the Quincy/Adams stop on the redline.  I would just hate to regret not being in the city since that is where we will spend all our time.  But this hotel is on average $200/night cheaper than anything decent I can find downtown.

  • We lived in Boston and worked in restaurants for awhile.  We lived on the green line which is easy access to fenway, so I'd recommend Hotels in Brookline, Allston/Brighton area.

Must eat places:  Modern Pastry and Neptune Oyster in the North End.  Zaftig's in Brookline.  Toro in the south end.  Clio if you're wanting to spend $.  Anna's taqueria (there are a bunch)

Fun places to see:  JFK museum, aquarium, boston common, the north end (there are lots of historic churches, etc).  Depending when you're there if you go by the river you can see people rowing and they sometimes have concerts at the clamshell.  It is a really walkable city; DH and I used to just pick a direction and wander.

  • Yes, the Quincy Marriott is way more out of the way then they make it seem. You can barely see the city from the highway where the hotel is! What about the Long Wharf Marriott? That's a great location. Have an awesome time, you wouldn?t believe how many activities Boston has to offer!
