Puppy food vs all stages? confused!

Hi everyone,

I'm adopting a pug puppy who I get to bring home in a week! I'm very excited and have been reading up on puppies as much as I can, but all of my past experience with dogs has been adult dogs so I'm a little confused.

My puppy has been getting Blue Buffalo from his foster (not the Wildnerness kind, but the one that does have oatmeal in it). I would like to switch to one without oatmeal and I am planning on doing the gradual switch.

From my research and recs from this board, I'm considering TOTW or Wellness Core. I thought I had read that TOTW is an "all stages" food but now I'm seeing they have separate kibble for puppies. What is the advantage (or disadvantage) of doing the puppy version. My puppy will be 9 weeks old when I bring him home. Should I start out with the puppy version, and if so when do I transition to the regular kind? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Puppy food vs all stages? confused!

  • Just wanted to say thanks for rescuing and for choosing to feed a high quality food.  I think puppy food normally has a higher fat content so it may be good to start there and transition when puppy is older.  TOTW is a good food, but so is blue buffalo.  TOTW is a better deal for what it is IMO

  • honestly I think its a marketing thing.

being labeled for all stages means it meets the nutritional requirements for growing and lactating animals.  IE puppies and females with puppies nursing.

  • If the puppy is a large breed dog, then there are other factors to consider - phosphorus and calcium along with fat content.  You need to be careful of the pup growing too fast and causing potental damage to bone structure.

  • I just wanted to pop in and say congrats on your new pug!!!!!!!  Do you have any photos?  I have 2 pugs (see siggy) and completely adore them.  I've had Teddie since he was 13 weeks old (he's now 4.5) and Skippy since he was 3.5 (he's now 5.5).  I feed Wellness Core, and they both do great on it.  It is a bit pricier than TOTW, and they're both great foods.  I didn't switch Teddie to it until he was 1 year old (started Skippy on it right away since he was already an adult), but I think PP is right that it's more the larger dogs that you need to worry about with grain-free, phosphorus levels, etc.

  • We have 2 lab mixes. 1 is 5 years old and 1 is 9months old. We just feed the 9 month old more food than the 5 year old.

We feed Acana Pacifica & Ziwipeak.

  • thanks for the tips!

Caz- I'll post pictures when I get him next weekend :)

  • I'd start out with the puppy formula and switch your dog over when he's older.

We feed our dogs the regular formula Wellness food. They used to be on Wellness Core but it gave them insane amounts of energy (beagles). Don't know if anyone else has had this issue, but just something to note. They do great on the regular formula and still have plenty of energy.
