Always hang curtains from the ceiling?

As a follow up to my post below... Do you always hang your curtains at the ceiling?

I can move them but not sure of its really worth the effort.

I also have a rod that is right at the height of my moulding in my bedroom. It is wood and the wood plugs are glued in so not even sure how I would move that one. Although that one would look better higher for sure.

Re: Always hang curtains from the ceiling?

  • Not worth the effort for me.
  • No, I don't.  Hanging them at the ceiling looks great when you've got big, tall windows, but it can look out of proportion with smaller windows.  I don't have a formula, though.  I just kind of eyeball it.  The rod for my living & dining room panels is somewhere about halfway between the top of the window trim and the crown molding.
  • Not necessarily.  I don't want to pay the extra for longer panels, so mine will be 84" inches from the floor.  Of course with only 8 foot ceilings, that practically IS all the way up I guess!

  • Nope.  Like PP said, I deal with it on a case-by-case basis so that they look proportionate and appropriate in the space.
  • Thx. I have 9 ft ceilings. my window is 16" from the ceiling, and my rod is 12" from the ceiling. So, a 4 " space between the window and the rod.

My windows are big, 100" wide and 64" tall.

  • No, they look stupid hung at ceiling height. You want to put them just below halfway between the top of the window moulding and the bottom of the ceiling moulding.
  • We have vaulted ceilings so it would look pretty silly!
  • I hang our curtains where it looks right on the window and fall to the right length at the bottom.  Some houses, due to low ceilings, the ceiling is pretty much necessary.  Others, not so much.

Our house in OH, we just eyeballed it by putting the curtains on the rods and then DH held the curtains up and moved them around until I was all "that's right - stop!"

We did hang the curtains literally FROM the ceiling in my office.  They were/are ikea curtains and we had the "wire" hangers instead of an actual rod.  I thought they'd be neat hanging from the ceiling, and they were!
