I think...

I TOTALLY rocked my phone interview. I'll be doing a (final) in-person interview next week. I'm trying not to get too excited, but this would be so so so amazing to get this job.

So, as far as thank you notes go, do I wait for the in-person interview to send one, or send one now and again after next week's? Sending one now seems kind of excessive, especially since its the same person I'll be meeting next week. What do you guys think?

Re: I think...

  • Yaaaaay! Fingers and toes crossed for you!
  • That's awesome!  Congrats!  I would personally wait until adter the inperson interview but idk if that's appropriate etiquette or not.
  • I would wait until the after the second interview. But, I haven't had a job interview in almost 8 years, so I'm not really sure I'm the best to give advice.

ETA: and Congrats on the good interview!

  • Awesome!

Send one now.  You may be talking to different people after the in person (ie: if you talked to HR now you may talk to people in your dept, or if you talked to dept people, you may have to meet with HR).  No need to send duplicates to any overlap, after the first mailed note a "it was lovely to meet you" email will be appropriate.

  • Since you'll be seeing her in a week anyway, I'd wait. And YAYAYAY congrats!! :)

Mary, thats what I was initially thinking too, but she's the actual hiring manager for the department and made it clear the in-person interview would be with her again, which is the only reason I'm hesitant. She's also on the east coast right now for a business trip and won't be back west coast till next week, so a mailed note won't get to her in time and she wouldn't give me her email, lol.

  • Fantastic! I'd wait until the in person interview to send the TY. Good luck!!
  • I'd send one now, via e-mail, in your situation. I'd send a hand-written after the in-person.

I see it as a way for you to let them know how motivated you are about the job. Something along the lines of "Thank you so much for speaking to me today... I really enjoyed our conversation, particularly this... I am certain that there is a lot I can bring to the position, etc. ... "

I would strongly discourage not sending anything until after the in-person. The decision will likely be made immediately after the in-person interview (the job I got, I got the offer before my TYs arrived in their mailboxes), so you want to have a follow-up "touch point" to express your interest in the position.

I also wouldn't ever be concerned about sending multiple Thank You notes to the same interviewer after each round of interviews. As a manager, I would think of it as showing motivation and interest in the job. (FWIW, I just went through the job-hunt, interview, hiring process six months ago)
