Hi. I've been lurking here since H and I started house shopping, posting a tiny bit here and there. But now we're under contract and I'm so excited I just couldn't wait to tell a bunch of internet strangers about it! lol.
It's an older home (1923), but good sized with 4 bedrooms. 1 bath that is usable but needs remodeled and 1 bath that needs finished (it has toilet and sink, exposed plumbing for shower but no surround or fixtures). The kitchen is completely bare, no appliances, cupboards, or counter tops, and cracked tiles in the floor, so that's where we're going to start. Further down the road, we'll tackle the partially finished basement.
We hope to close in about five weeks. H and I will have about one week to start on the reno sans child (we have a 18mo son). He begins his new job in June, and I'll start grad school in August. We're doing all the planning and stuff long distance, moving about 400 miles from our current home.
I'd love to share some of our trials and triumphs here, and seek your collective wisdom.

I know. I keep telling myself that I shouldn't be so excited because it's going to be HARD, not fun.
We're hoping to drive down again before closing and take more pictures and take measurements so we can start planning the layout of the kitchen.
It will be hard and stressful but I'm sure also fun at times and when you have all the work completed, it will be so rewarding!
I admire your strength and ability to take on such a major reno. I would never tackle it personally. Can't wait to hear all about it and see photos of your progress. You should totally start a blog of your experiences.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
LOL. This is actually less than we originally planned to do. We thought we'd get a complete fixer-uper, but the rest of the house is in great shape. We grew up around DIY remodeling, though. His parents added a second story to his childhood home doing all the work themselves; mine built a 3000 sq foot home doing absolutely everything except pouring the foundation. So we're used to large "projects".
Thanks! I checked out your blog-- I like the detailed cost analysis. Very helpful.
