Cat knot problem

So it seems after winter my cat, who has I guess medium/long hair ALWAYS gets knots. I brush the one his back and sides, but he does not let me get his "butt knots" out. Usually he bites me, cries, hisses or just runs away.

Last year I took him to the vet and they took them out for me. I'm probably going to do that again this year since I know they can deal with the crying and know how to handle him better.

But does anyone have this issue with their cats that have longer hair? Are you able to get them out? Advice?

Re: Cat knot problem

  • I just went to the groomer for the same issue with my female cat. She's got short hair, but she's too big to clean herself. Don't use a brush, get a comb.

Keep the comb close the fur and lift up, the knots should come out after a few gentle tugs. Another thing you can try is mixing water and skin so soft lotion and spray it on and rubbing it in. It helps to keep the dander down and it's easier to comb her now.

Also, my cat bites and claws if I'm in her personal space too long. So the groomer suggested putting her on a leash up on the washer/dryer. She's less likely to attack if she's up and tied to the leash.

The other option if you are having issues is to take them to the groomer.

  • Try the furminator brush.  It is amazing! I got ours on Amazon; I think they are around $20.  It is seriously the most amazing let brush.

  • I just hack the knots off our cranky long-hair.  Carefully, of course, because occasionally they're really close to the skin.  He objects less if I just cut them out instead of trying to run a brush through them.

  • We have 2 persians. Girl-persian growls when you brush her.

Every three months or so I give up and take them to the groomer's. Which is nice, because they can do their nails, too, without me struggling with it.

  • Persians as well, leg and butt knots are the worst - DH brushes them mostly . they get touchy on their legs and butt....we try to tease some knots out a little and then furminate them away.  Are you continuing to brush through the year, maybe that will get him used to it a little?

This for me and Lily too!  I do also brush (she's getting more lenient in her old age), but she still gets knots that need trimming with scissors. VERY carefully. I cut her once about 9 years ago and I still get nauseous thinking about it.
